The World Cup is nearly two weeks away, and bystanders' noses are already well out of joint.
Serbia supporters eagerly hit the road to Klagenfurt, Austria, expecting to see their team thrash WC-bound New Zealand in a friendly. It didn't turn out that way as New Zealand edged an understrength Serb outfit 1-0. Serb fans pelted the pitch with missiles to start the second half, and half a dozen supporters ran riot over the pitch.
We can't read too much into this result. I still think Serbia is a decent choice to come out of Group D behind Germany. New Zealand will not be able to compete in Group F.
In other news, Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o has threatened to quit the team after former Cameroon international Roger Milla criticized Eto'o's play in the press. Milla, unlikely superstar of the 1990 World Cup, griped about Eto'o's actions as captain and said that while Eto'o played well for his clubs, Eto'o "still hasn't brought anything to our national team".
Eto'o has 44 goals in 94 appearances for Cameroon. That doesn't sound like "nothing" to me.
Coach Paul Le Guen has already named Eto'o to the team, so if Eto'o is to withdraw it'll need to be for medical reasons. I wonder if "thin skin" is a valid complaint. It's a weak squad this year for Cameroon. It'll most likely be best remembered for featuring both Rigobert Song and his nephew Alex. Cameroon will fight it out with Denmark to come out of Group E with Holland.
