The Celtics/Cavaliers game on TNT to kick off the season grabbed most of my attention, but every time I flipped channels, the Wizards were making a run at the Mavericks. Gilbert Arenas was moving easily and explosively, repeatedly attacking the rim for 29 points and nine assists in 38 minutes. That?s a welcome sight after two years of frustration. He?ll need to keep that scoring up with Antawn Jamison out for another month. Speaking of Jamison, Andray Blatche filled in nicely with 20 points, seven rebounds and two blocks, while making me appear savvy in one fantasy league. Consistency and maturity have been Blatche?s bugaboos thus far in his career. You get the feeling if he conquers the maturity, the consistency would be fine. Although just 23, Blatche is entering his fifth NBA season, which is long enough to learn a thing or two. Defensively, they held Dallas under 40-percent shooting. Those aren?t the Wizards I remember. And the early returns on the offseason additions were good, as Mike Miller (eight rebounds), Randy Foye (19 points) and even Fabricio Oberto (+15) contributed. Foye (+16) got most of his minutes backing up Arenas at point guard, but also was on the floor in the fourth quarter with Agent Zero and Miller. The Wizards lengthened their roster, adding good depth in the offseason and added a coach who?s been successful everywhere he?s been. I?m setting the DVR for Friday night?s game against division-opponent Atlanta. Really nice win for Washington and new head coach Flip Saunders Tuesday night, going into Dallas and leaving with a 102-91 win over the Mavericks. The Wizards flew under my radar during training camp and preseason, but they looked poised to make the Southeast Division one of the best in the league in 2009-10.
