Continuing our new feature, here is the NFL news that broke today, July 28, 2009.
Brett Favre is stating retired. I loathe the constant updates about Brett Favre. Will he stay retired? Will he play? It's |STAR|so|STAR| annoying. It's fitting, then, that the news that he'd stay retired comes out on my day to write this blog. Honestly, I can't say I'm disappointed. I suspect the only people who are disappointed are the Vikings (who won't be as good without Favre), fantasy owners of Vikings skill position players, and the 25 reporters ESPN had to fire now that there is no more Favre news to report. In all seriousness, all Vikings skill players get a small downgrade now that they will have a full season of Sage Rosenfels and/or Tarvaris Jackson at QB.
Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels to battle for Vikings QB job. With Favre retired, Rosenfels and Jackson will battle for the starting QB job in Minnesota. I'd call Rosenfels the favorite - something like a 60/40 favorite. I also think Rosenfels has more upside for fantasy purposes. That "Superman" play last year against the Colts aside, Rosenfels has played well at times (in limited opportunities).
Braylon Edwards put on non-football injury list. Those hoping for a rebound season from Edwards better hold their breath - he was just put on the non-football injury list. The rumor is that Edwards hurt his ankle playing basketball. I wish I knew more, but Browns coach Eric Mangini is a disciple of Bill Belicheck, and that includes his tight lip with the media on injury issues. Hence, it might be a while before we know the extent of Edwards' injury. Keep an eye on this as the preseason unfolds.
Shaun Hill and Alex Smith in "dead heat" for 49ers starting QB job. Mike Singletary was quoted today as saying that he won't decide on the Niners starting QB until after the second preseason game. The Niners were already a run-oriented team with subpar receivers, so this news only buries all 49ers QBs even further on our cheatsheets.
Bills not interested in Michael Vick. Bills' management went on record today saying that they are not interested in Vick. Too bad; imagine the circus that would have resulted from Vick and Terrell Owens being in the same training camp.
