Starting pitching is a different animal than it was 20, 40, 60 or 100 years ago: pitch counts, lefty specialists, etc. All reduce the number of wins a starting pitcher may earn in his career.

But the prognostication powers of the media haven't changed. Check out these examples of how each of the last few 300-game winners may be the "last one ever!"

Of course, the players are no better:

"I don't think 300 wins will be achieved beyond Greg Maddux," said Randy Johnson in 2004.

And there are some smart enough in the media to realize these kinds of predictions are silly.

But my guess is when Johan Santana wins 300, we'll see a story saying "Santana May Be Last 300-Game Winner."
