We know how to look backwards at things like K rate, K:BB ratio and GB/FB ratio, but that analysis just tells you how good a pitcher actually was, independent of his cosmetic stats (wins, ERA). But noting improved velocity can help us say which pitchers are likely to do better going forward. This is a big advance and one I expect to be part of the fantasy mainstream before long once reliable data is more widely available.
