My 15-team home league draft is tomorrow, and for the first time ever, we decided the draft order several days ahead of time. I lucked into the 10th pick.
Now, I really can't think of any draft position I'd want to have less. Not only do I miss out on the really elite players, but I'm concerned that I won't get an Alfonso Soriano or a Carlos Beltran on the way back (Pick 20). (It's a NY-based league, and anyone who ever played for Yankees or Mets is unlikely to slip below their ADP).
In the first round, I know for sure that Albert Pujols, Hanley Ramirez, Jose Reyes and David Wright will be gone, and most likely Miguel Cabrera, Grady Sizemore and Ryan Braun. At eight and nine, it's more of a crapshoot - I'd guess Chase Utley, now that he's healthy, and Jimmy Rollins could go, but it's hard to say.
Assuming the top 7 are gone (and they're likely to be), do I take Rollins or Utley if one is there at 10? Will Utley run this year? Will Rollins hit for enough power?
If both Rollins and Utley are gone, then what?
I'm probably looking at Josh Hamilton, Mark Teixeira or Ian Kinsler. Teixeira is the safest one, Kinsler has the most upside given his position, but also the most risk. Not thrilled with any of them as my first round pick.
Or do I reach for Soriano, figuring that he's very unlikely to be there on the way back? (I'd say there's a 20 percent chance he's still around, and that might be enough to pass on him at No. 10. I like Soriano as much or more than the other three straight up.)
I would not consider Ryan Howard at 10 because he's a batting average liability who doesn't run or play a scarce position.
Or do I trade down (not even sure if that's allowed or if someone would be willing). I'd love to draft 15th and get Soriano and Beltran on the turn, but either or both could be gone by then.
After all the auctions I've done this spring, and the Yahoo Friends and Family League draft in which I've picked second, this is really the first time I've had to consider who I like at No. 10.
