I think it is safe to say at this point most college football fans hate the BCS. Alas, we are still stuck with it, and no matter how much we (and the coaches as well) clamor for a playoff system, it would seem like we are left with the current system for the foreseeable future. However, I do believe there is one thing that could be done this year that could really speed up the process of getting us a college football playoff sooner rather than later. Associated Press, I hope you are listening; we need a split national championship.

Thanks to USC, I think it is entirely feasible. After dismantling (don't let the final score throw you) Penn State, the Trojans are left with just one loss. That loss came on the road to Oregon State, who went on to almost win the Pac-10 and then defeat Pittsburgh in the Sun Bowl with out either Rodgers brother. You could easily make the case they are just as worthy of being the national champion as Florida or Oklahoma. This becomes an even greater possibility if Florida, the number two seed, wins but does not win convincingly. USC with an easy win over Penn State or Florida winning in a squeaker? Again, the argument can be made that USC deserves the national championship over them.

Or what if Texas blows out Ohio State and Oklahoma, a team they beat on a neutral field, barely beats Florida? Could Texas have a case? Perhaps, especially if Texas Tech wins the Cotton Bowl.

I'm not saying either Texas or USC SHOULD be the national champion. I am just saying a legitimate argument could be made, and if the AP made such an argument, it would throw the entire concept of the BCS into disarray. The reason the BCS was created was to eliminate debate over who the champ is. If the AP names a team other than Florida or Oklahoma the champion, it does away with the entire reason the BCS was created. The fervor for a playoff would become even stronger, and its need would be even more obvious. Will it happen? Unlikely. However, if the AP decides to name USC or Texas the national champion, it could go a long way in destroying the BCS which would be, of course, a wonderful thing.
