Training camps officially commence this week, which means Week 1 is finally just around the corner and our long national football-less nightmare is nearly over. Despite the fact that veterans have yet to report for most teams there's still plenty of news to sift through, so let's get down to it, boppers.
- the big news Monday was the reinstatement of Josh Gordon by the NFL, albeit on a conditional basis. He hasn't played since 2014 and will still need to serve a four-game suspension, but the Browns are desperate for help on the outside and will give him every opportunity to prove he can still contribute. Based purely on his career averages, Gordon would produce 55 catches for 944 yards and five TDs in 12 games, but assuming he'll have no rust to shake off or adjustment period to a new offense and quarterback in RGIII would be a mistake, and he'll also carry significant risk that the league will boot him yet again for so much as looking funny at an over-the-counter cold remedy. That said, no WR will be able to match his fantasy upside as a late-round flyer, so your risk tolerance should determine when you consider calling his name.
- among the notable names set to begin camp on a team's PUP list are Jordy Nelson (knee), Dion Lewis (knee) and Julian Edelman (foot). Edelman in particular is worth noting, as he's coming back from the same kind of Jones fracture that ruined Dez Bryant's 2015 season and Julio Jones' 2013. Unlike those two Edelman underwent his surgery in the offseason, but given the difficulty Dez and Julio had in regaining their usual form right away it's fair to wonder whether Edelman will be similarly slowed down early in the year. Not having Tom Brady for four games won't help his numbers much either.
- not on the PUP list is Joe Flacco, who's just eight months removed from ACL surgery. The Ravens' receiving corps could be missing its two biggest weapons in Steve Smith (Achilles) and Breshad Perriman (knee) to begin camp though, but at least Flacco will get a chance to develop some chemistry with veteran vagabond Mike Wallace, now on his third team in four seasons since leaving the Steelers.
- in addition to getting Gordon back, the Browns are trying to find ways to get the ball in Duke Johnson's hands more often including plans to split him out as a wide receiver on occasion. New head coach Hue Jackson also said over the summer that he thought Johnson has three-down potential, so it wouldn't be out of the question to see the second-year back take over starting duties entirely. Of course, Jackson also called Isaiah Crowell "explosive" and an "extreme talent" at the same time, so make of his statement what you will. Regardless, Johnson should see an expanded role and could be more than just a PPR darling in 2016.
- unsurprisingly, Blaine Gabbert heads into camp on top of the 49ers' depth cart at QB. The front office tried hard to trade Colin Kaepernick in the offseason and Kaepernick has been rehabbing his shoulder after surgery anyway, so this isn't much of a surprise. Both QBs have the mobile skill set new head coach Chip Kelly looks for, but Kaepernick's upside is more significant should he end up winning the job. Kelly's offense say declining returns each year in Philadelphia, but should still be able to jolt some life into a passing game that desperately needs it.
