The Mavericks selected Terry with the 31st overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, and at the time the Stanford product was generally viewed as a fairly high-upside prospect. However, Terry went on to appear in only 11 games for Dallas as a rookie, and he was subsequently waived following the 2020-21 season. Terry signed on with the Grizzlies but appeared in only two NBA games in 2021-22. Per his Instagram post, the 22-year-old cited "the anxiety this sport has caused me" among the reasons for the decision to step away.
