2024 Fantasy Outlook
Despite finishing just inside the top 200 in standard fantasy formats, Barrett managed to increase his numbers across the board during the 2023-24 season. A mid-season move to Toronto seemed to revitalize Barrett, providing him with an opportunity to take on more of a leadership role both on and off the court. He finished the season by scoring at least 25 points in four of his final six games, albeit six games interrupted by a leave of absence due to personal reasons. He finished with averages of 20.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.6 three-pointers, all serviceable numbers. However, his efficiency took the biggest steps, shooting a career-best 49.5 percent from the field. Given his previous best was 44.1 percent during his sophomore season, managers may want to pause before assuming that he will repeat that performance this season. With that said, his role in Toronto figures to be significant, making him someone to consider towards the end of drafts. If you can stomach his poor free-throw shooting and lack of defensive stats, there could be some meat on the bone moving forward. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Rowan Alexander "RJ" Barrett Jr was born in Toronto in 2000. Barrett comes from a family of athletes. His father, Rowan Barrett, is the vice president and assistant GM of the Canadian National Team and a former player at St, John's. His mother, Kesha Duhaney, was a track and field athlete at St. John's. Barrett lived for a time in France while his father was playing professionally there, then moved with his family to Mississauga, Ontario in 2008. Barrett played three years of high school basketball at Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida, finishing his career with an 86-7 record. As a senior, Barrett averaged 28.7 points, 8.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game, leading Montverde to a 35-0 record and national championship. Barrett's outstanding senior season of high school led to him being named the 2017-18 National Gatorade Player of the Year. Before committing to Duke University, Barrett was rated as the No. 1 overall prospect in his class by Rivals.com, Scout.com, and the 24/7 Sports composite list. Barrett wears No. 9 because it was his father's number in the Olympics. He enjoys dining at NYC eateries Carbone and Joe's Pizza. You can follow RJ Barrett on Twitter @RjBarrett6 and on Instagram @Rjbarrett. In his one season at Duke, Barrett led the Blue Devils with 22.6 points, 7.6 rebounds and 4.3 assists per contest. The 6-7 wing scored at least 20 points in his first four games and 10 of his first 11 contests. For his collegiate debut, Barrett put up 33 points on 13-of-26 from the field in the win over Kentucky at the Champions Classic. Barrett flirted with a triple-double as he accumulated 23 points, 16 rebounds and nine assists in a loss to Syracuse. Barrett had eight other double-doubles. On Feb. 16, he accomplished the feat in a win over NC State with 23 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. The wing helped the Blue Devils win the ACC Tournament championship with 18.3 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. Barrett had 18 points and 11 assists in a second round NCAA Tournament win over Virginia Tech and led Duke to the Elite Eight. Before declaring for the 2019 draft, Barrett was named USA Today National Player of the Year, was a consensus first-team All-American selection, and received the Jerry West Award as the nation's best shooting guard.

Records 30-point night in loss
FToronto Raptors
December 16, 2024
Barrett closed with 32 points (11-24 FG, 2-4 3Pt, 8-9 FT), five rebounds, nine assists, two blocks and one steal across 37 minutes during Monday's 122-121 loss to the Bulls.
ANALYSIS
Barrett bounced back from a quiet 13-point showing Thursday against the Heat and fell just one assist shy of a double-double. He continues to slot in as the team's top weapon on the offensive end and should see heavy usage going forward given the absence of Scottie Barnes (ankle) and potential future absence of Jakob Poeltl, who exited versus Chicago with a groin injury.

2019
Barrett has been a volatile but talented player throughout his career. The former No. 3 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft is still just 23 years old and has upside, but he's never put together a breakout campaign. In 2022-23. Barrett averaged 19.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 0.4 steals and 1.7 threes across 34 minutes a night. The counting stats made him valuable, but it comes with some inefficiencies from a shooting perspective. Barrett shot 43 percent from the field, 31 percent from three-point range and 74 percent from the free-throw line on high volume last year. That's a killer for your fantasy team, but it's hard to argue about any player getting 15-20 shots and 35 minutes a night. Barrett is going to have to develop his efficiency because the volume will inevitably fall off. New York has added Julius Randle and Jalen Brunson over recent years and is still in the market for some big-name players. They've also acquired Josh Hart and Donte DiVincenzo over the last year, and those two will surely hurt Barrett's role as well. Things are going in the wrong direction for this youngster, but talent can prevail if he can put it all together.
Plagued by a slow start to begin the year, Barrett finished 2021-22 averaging 20.0 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists across 70 games. He also displayed great success getting to the free-throw line last season, ranking 16th in the league at 5.8 FTA per game. His final 40 games yielded 23.7 points per game on a 41.1/35.1/71.9 percent shooting slash. Nonetheless, last season marked a noticeable decline in productivity from Barrett. Salvaged by volume, the 22-year-old having ups and downs is natural. However, he shot 40.1 percent from deep two seasons ago -- and that sharp dip in three-point shooting is problematic. Additionally, his free-throw shooting has been below average throughout his young career. The Knicks added Jalen Brunson and possess an exciting young nucleus. Barrett's adjusted field-goal percentage jumps from 43.7 percent to 63.2 percent on catch-and-shoot opportunities when he's open. Given a good environment, it's a pivotal season for Barrett to showcase efficiency. With new weapons set to contribute in New York, Barrett's volume may dip slightly, but he should be in store for higher-quality looks. He also enters a contract year, which has historical precedence for stat production.
Barrett is coming off a productive sophomore season in which he posted 17.6 points, 5.8 boards, 3.0 dimes and 1.7 triples per game while also dramatically improving his shooting percentages. That's the good news. The bad news is New York spent the off-season adding playmakers and shooters in Kemba Walker and Evan Fournier, which seems to lower Barrett on New York's scoring option pecking order. But maybe Barrett will have more room to operate as defenses worry about the two veteran guards. The three-year veteran is definitely, once again, New York's starting small forward, and we know coach Tom Thibodeau loves to give his starters extra minutes. The Knicks' new talented roster will give Thibodeau the option of going small-ball with Randle at the five, surrounded by four proven shooters. That situation would allow Barrett the opportunity to maintain last year's whopping 34.5 minutes per game, despite the new roster additions. At age 21, Barrett still has plenty of upside. Those concerned about his modest rookie season in 2019-20 should take notice and acknowledge Barrett is a player on the rise.
While Barrett was unlikely to match the hype of Duke teammate Zion Williamson in the 2019-20 rookie class, he put up a solid debut campaign. The 2019 third-overall pick finished the season having averaged 14.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.0 steals over 30.4 minutes of run. Unfortunately, his efficiency numbers tell a slightly less appealing story. Barrett sported just a .445 effective field goal percentage to go along with a 32.0 percent mark from beyond the arc and just a 61.4 rate from the charity stripe. Those tallies fall well below the league average across the board, especially for a guard. Barrett should see plenty of action again in his second season for a rebuilding Knicks club and be given every opportunity to prove his worth given the draft capital involved, so there's no reason to panic at this early stage of his career.
Barrett will step into the New York spotlight after an impressive freshman campaign at Duke where he averaged 22.6 points, 7.6 rebounds and 4.3 assists while shooting 30.8 percent from deep -- a mark feels like it needs to improve given the importance of three-point shooting, especially for guards, in the NBA. Barrett appears to be in line to play a high-volume role as both a scorer and playmaker in his rookie season, though the Knicks do have other, more experienced ball-dependent players on the roster, including Dennis Smith Jr., Elfrid Payton and Julius Randle. Barrett showed off his potential in summer league, averaging 16.8 points, 9.3 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.0 block in four games. However, he shot an extremely underwhelming 37.3 percent from the field, 28.6 percent from three and 65.4 percent from the charity stripe. On one hand, it feels like there's a clear avenue for Barrett to take control of the Knicks' offense and be the face of the franchise as a rookie. On the other hand, the number of other options New York has to score and distribute the basketball means Barrett could get lost in the shuffle if his efficiency, playmaking and/or defense are worse than anticipated.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Set for increased workload
FToronto Raptors
December 10, 2024
Barrett will have to improve his production and is likely to handle an even bigger workload on the offensive side of the ball while Scottie Barnes is sidelined with an ankle injury, Eric Koreen of The Athletic speculates.
ANALYSIS
Barrett posted 30 points in the loss to the Knicks on Monday, and he may need to produce similar numbers on a regular basis with Barnes sidelined for an undetermined period. This might be the final season in which Barrett is asked to command a heavy workload on offense if the Raptors get a high lottery pick and end up selecting a player who commands a high percentage of the offense, as Koreen details.
