Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Joe Hinman Wieskamp was born in August of 1999 in Muscatine, Iowa. He is the son of Stephen and Dana Wieskamp. The sharpshooter had a historic basketball career at Muscatine High School, finishing as the Iowa Class 4A career scoring leader with 2,376 points. Wieskamp also averaged a state-high 33.5 points and 13.5 rebounds as a senior and was named Iowa Mr. Basketball (on top of being voted the Iowa Gatorade Player of the Year for the second consecutive year). As the state's highest-rated prospect in the class of 2018, Wieskamp chose to stay home and play in college with the Iowa Hawkeyes. In his first year, he started all 35 games, averaged 11.1 points and 4.9 rebounds, shot 42.4 percent from beyond the three-point arc and earned All-Big Ten Freshman Team honors. This early success led Wieskamp to declare for the 2019 NBA Draft, though he maintained his collegiate eligibility by never hiring an agent and ultimately decided to return to college. He would go on to improve statistically in each of the next two years. As a sophomore, Wieskmap averaged 14 points and 6.1 rebounds and led the Big Ten in free throw percentage, shooting 85.6 percent from the charity stripe. Wieskamp followed this up by earning Second Team All-Big Ten honors in his junior season as he averaged 14.8 points and 6.6 rebounds and led the Big Ten in three-point accuracy -- 49.5 percent in league play and 46.2 percent overall. In April of 2021, Wieskamp declared for the 2021 NBA Draft and, this time chose to remain in the draft. He was selected with the 41st overall selection by the San Antonio Spurs. Wieskamp then played in the NBA Summer League before going on to sign a two-way contract to play for San Antonio and their NBA G League affiliate, the Austin Spurs. ANALYSIS
Wieskamp missed one game while on the mend from a calf injury, and he looked to be at 100 percent Thursday evening. He was a solid presence for Maine across the board, dishing out a season-high seven dimes while swatting away two shots after collecting just one block over his previous four matchups.

Wieskamp played in just 29 games during his rookie season, finishing well outside the top 500 in standard leagues. Despite the Spurs looking to the future, it remains unclear where he fits in their long-term plans. However, as with many of the fringe players on the San Antonio roster, he is at least worth monitoring just in case he falls into a more significant role than anticipated.
Wieskamp was selected by the Spurs with the 41st overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. A late riser up draft boards, Wieskamp is one of the best spot-up shooters in the class. The junior averaged 14.8 points per game and shot 46.2 percent from three-point range at Iowa last season. He likely won't fill a major role for the Spurs in 2021-22, but if the team shifts toward a rebuild, he could have a chance to carve out a bench role.
