Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

LaRavia was born on Nov. 3, 2001, in Pasadena, California. His family moved from sunny Pasadena to Indianapolis when LaRavia was six years old. He played basketball for Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis. He had a limited role until his senior season, in which he became the team's leading scorer, averaging 17.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.3 steals per game. He earned Indiana All-Star honors and helped Lawrence Central win its first sectional title since 2012. LaRavia first committed to playing college basketball for SIU Edwardsville but reopened his recruitment after a coaching change. He later committed to Indiana State. As a freshman at Indiana State, LaRavia averaged 9.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. He was named to the All-Newcomer and All-Freshman Teams in the Missouri Valley Conference. In his sophomore season, LaRavia averaged 12.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, earning second-team All-MVC recognition. Following the departure of coach Greg Lansing, LaRavia transferred to Wake Forest. He averaged 14.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game as a junior. He was named to the second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference. On March 29, 2022, LaRavia declared for the 2022 NBA draft while maintaining his college eligibility. On June 1, 2022, he announced that he would remain in the draft and forgo his remaining college eligibility. He was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the 19th overall pick.

Hands out career-high eight assists
FMemphis Grizzlies
November 7, 2024
LaRavia produced 13 points (6-11 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 0-1 FT), five rebounds, eight assists and one steal in 29 minutes during Wednesday's 131-114 win over the Lakers.
ANALYSIS
LaRavia was more active than usual in Wednesday's win, setting his career high in assists and matching his season high in shot attempts. Memphis is dealing with injuries, so this type of production from LaRavia will only last so long. Still, fantasy managers should take note. In his 26.4 minutes per game, the third-year forward is averaging a balanced 8.0 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.9 assists.

Dan Bruno looks at some of the NBA's rising talent, including Bilal Coulibaly, who has been a source of efficient scoring for fantasy managers.
Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
After being taken with the 19th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, LaRavia was used sparingly during his rookie season. He made just 35 appearances, logging 11.8 minutes per game, during which he averaged 3.0 points, 1.8 rebounds and 0.7 three-pointers. Although the Grizzlies are not particularly deep at the power forward position, LaRavia is likely going to struggle to play more than 18 minutes this season. David Roddy and Santi Aldama have both demonstrated more on the court than LaRavia in their limited minutes, while Kenneth Lofton also lies waiting for his opportunity. Barring a string of injuries to other players, LaRavia is not someone managers need to be considering outside of very deep leagues.
After two seasons at Indiana State, LaRavia transferred to Wake Forest for his junior and final collegiate season. He averaged 14.6 points on 56/38/78 shooting, 6.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.7 combined steals-plus-blocks in his lone campaign with the Demon Deacons. The 6-foot-7 forward was selected with the 19th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft and went to the Grizzlies. There are questions about his ability to be a successful playmaker at the NBA level, for himself or others, but he did so effectively in his college system. He can cut, pass and make spot-up jumpers, and he's a solid defender with enough size to switch as a pro. With Jaren Jackson (foot) expected to be out for the first couple months of the season at least, LaRavia has an opportunity to make an impact immediately. He'll battle Brandon Clarke and Ziaire Williams for minutes at the four, but Memphis isn't an especially deep team.

Standout performer in camp
FMemphis Grizzlies
October 3, 2024
LaRavia has been turning heads with his play during the Grizzlies' training camp, according to Damichael Cole of The Memphis Commercial Appeal. "He was definitely one of the standouts in training camp," head coach Taylor Jenkins said. "... Everything we're asking, he's doing it."
ANALYSIS
Marcus Smart and Luke Kennard also had high praise for LaRavia, with Smart saying he's been an impactful perimeter defender and Kennard praising both his shooting and aggressiveness on both ends of the floor. LaRavia is vying for a spot on the bench, and he could be in a good position to see minutes early in the season due to both Vince Williams and GG Jackson being sidelined with injuries.
