Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Jae'Sean Tate was born in 1995 in Toledo, Ohio. He is the son of Jermaine Tate and Cori Key. Jermaine played college basketball at Ohio State and the University of Cincinnati before playing professionally overseas. Cori died tragically when Jea'Sean was young. Jermaine and his stepmom Jenice Tate later raised Jae'Sean. Jae'Sean has a tattoo of a key on his leg to honor his mother. Tate played his high school basketball at Pickerington Central, which is outside of Columbus. At Pickerington Central, Tate was teammates with fellow NBA veteran Caris LeVert. When Tate was a sophomore, his high school team won the 2012 Division I championship. As a senior, Tate was named Co-Player of the Year in the Ohio Capital Conference. Tate then played four years of college ball at Ohio State. He spent the 2018-19 season playing for the Antwerp Giants in Belgium. In 2019-20, Tate was a wing for the Sydney Kings in Australia, where he scored 16.4 points a game and was named to the All-NBL First Team. Tate was an Ohio Sate Buckeye from 2014 through 2018. In the 2014-15 season, the forward averaged 8.8 points and 5.0 rebounds, started the last 16 games of the season and earned Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors. He was known for occasionally playing center for OSU despite being 6-foot-4. As a sophomore, Tate's averages increased to 11.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per contest before a shoulder injury ended his season early. As a junior, Tate was selected to the Honorable Mention All-Big Ten team and led Ohio State in scoring with 14.3 points per contest. Tate was a co-captain his senior season (2017-18), earned Second Team All-Big-Ten honors and helped lead the squad to a 25-9 record and an NCAA Tournament appearance. After college, Tate played the 2018-19 season with the Antwerp Giants in Belgium. For 2019-20, Tate starred for the Sydney Kings of the NBL and earned All-NBL First Team honors. He began his NBA career when the Houston Rockets signed the former Buckeye in November of 2020.

Good to go for camp

Tate (ankle) will be a full participant when the Rockets open training camp next Tuesday, Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Tate missed the final six games of the 2023-24 campaign with a right ankle sprain. He's been scrimmaging while taking contact since last week, so it's unlikely he will have limitations during camp. Tate finished the 2023-24 season with averages of 4.1 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 15.9 minutes across 65 appearances.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
2021
After strong showings in both 2020-21 and 2021-22, Tate basically vanished off the face of the earth last year, playing in just 31 games. In that time he averaged 9.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 0.7 steals per game, all career lows. Looking ahead to the 2023-24 season, he is almost the forgotten man when it comes to projecting the Houston rotation. The Rockets have loaded up on young pieces, with Tate now having to battle Dillon Brooks, Tari Eason and Cam Whitmore for playing time. It would appear as though both Eason and Brooks will be ahead of Tate, with Whitmore snapping at his heels. Given the depth in Houston, there is a chance Tate is not even in the rotation come opening night, making him an afterthought in most fantasy leagues.
Tate's second season with Houston wasn't vastly different from his first. He started 77 of his 78 appearances and played a complementary role to the more talented young core. In 26.4 minutes per game, the forward averaged 11.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists. Though Tate isn't a magnificent three-point shooter (0.8 makes per game on 31.2 percent), he takes nearly all of his shots from the rim or three, as he attempted just five long twos last season. He sported a decent mark of 2.4 free-throw attempts per game when considering his workload and his 9.3 field-goal attempts overall, though he shot just 70.7 percent from the charity stripe. This season, there's a strong chance Tate comes off the bench, though that will probably depend on whether Eric Gordon starts or is brought off the bench as a scoring sixth man. Either way, Tate should continue seeing minutes in the mid-20s, though he's also now competing for time against No. 3 overall pick Jabari Smith and No. 17 overall pick Tari Eason, who looked great in Summer League. Kenyon Martin, another forward, also seems to own organizational trust. It's encouraging that Houston inked Tate to a three-year, $22.1 million deal over the summer, though it's not exactly the type of money that guilts a coach into handing him minutes without conditions. Tate ranked 144th in per-game production last season, so he's likely not worthy of a pick in most standard leagues this time around.
Tate was picked up by the Rockets last season after going undrafted, and his level of production was unexpected. He started 58 of his 70 appearances for Houston, and his performances really started to pick up in early February. From Feb. 4 onward, the forward averaged 12.6 points on 50/31/70 shooting, 5.6 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.4 steals in 30.6 minutes. He ranked 118th in per-game fantasy production, but his availability allowed him to rank a surprising 75th in total production. His role figures to be reduced heading into 2021-22. The Rockets drafted promising rookie Jalen Green with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 draft, and he figures to start at either shooting guard or small forward next to Kevin Porter. The additions of Daniel Theis and Alperen Sengun also complicate Tate's ability to play in the frontcourt. Danuel House and Eric Gordon will also be vying for minutes on the wing. All things considered, it seems likely that Tate's production will take a step back. He should go undrafted in standard leagues but could function as a decent pickup if the Rockets start to deal with injuries.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Expected to stay in Houston for now
FHouston Rockets
June 24, 2024
The Rockets are expected to exercise their team option in Tate's contract, Evan Sidery of Forbes Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Tate went undrafted in 2018, but he has spent the last four seasons with the Rockets and will likely have his team option picked up for the 2024-25 season. The 28-year-old's production has slowly declined as the Rockets have brought in new young talent, and he averaged 4.1 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 0.6 steals across 15.9 minutes last season, all of which were career lows. Tate could also serve as a potential trade piece in the offseason on an expiring contract.
