2024 Fantasy Outlook
After an encouraging rookie season, Ivey was unable to make any significant steps forward during his sophomore campaign. While his production was comparable to his first season, his efficiency remains an issue, as does his lack of defensive contributions. He finished outside the top 250 in nine-category leagues, averaging 15.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 0.7 steals and 1.6 three-pointers on 42.9 percent shooting from the field and 74.9 percent from the line. With Cade Cunningham locked in as the starting point guard, Ivey's inability to consistently score from the perimeter raises a few questions regarding his role moving forward. In an attempt to address those concerns, Detroit added Tim Hardaway and Malik Beasley, both players noted for their shooting acumen. Tobias Harris also signed a multi-year deal to return to Detroit, while Ron Holland was taken with the fifth pick in the 2024 Draft. The Pistons are now in a position where they can chop and change the guard rotation, meaning Ivey's playing time could fluctuate. However, his age should work in his favor, at least down the stretch. If and when the Pistons are eliminated from playoff contention, they may lean into their youth a bit more. Ivey is worth considering as a pick in the final rounds of drafts, albeit one who may have to be dropped if his offensive struggles continue. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Jaden Edward Dhananjay Ivey was born Feb. 13, 2002 in Mishawaka, Indiana. His mother, Niele Ivey, serves as the head women's basketball coach at Notre Dame at the time of Jaden being drafted. She played in the WNBA for five seasons and was an All-American at Notre Dame. Jaden's father, Javin Hunter, played in the NFL for the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers. Jaden's grandfather, James Hunter, also played in the NFL for the Detroit Lions. Ivey has one brother, Jordan Hunter. Ivey was a multi-sport athlete growing up, playing football and soccer in addition to basketball, and he practiced karate, but he began focusing on hoops as a freshman in high school. For his first three years, he played at Marian High School in Mishawaka, Indiana. For his final year, he transferred to La Lumiere School in La Porte, Indiana -- one of the country's top programs. He also played in the 2021 U19 FIBA Team World Cup, where he averaged 12.3 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.6 steals in 16 minutes per game while the United States brought home the Gold medal. Ivey was a consensus four-star recruit and committed to play college ball at Purdue. Starting 12 of 23 games as a freshman, the guard averaged 11.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 24.2 minutes and was named to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team. Starting 34 of 36 games as a sophomore, Ivey enjoyed a breakout campaign behind 17.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 31.5 minutes. He was named to the All-Big Ten First Team and Consensus All-American Second Team. Following his sophomore season, he declared for the 2022 NBA Draft and was selected with the fifth overall pick by the Detroit Pistons.

Undergoes successful surgery

Lower Leg
January 2, 2025
The Pistons announced Thursday that Ivey underwent successful surgery to repair a broken fibula in his left leg, and he will be re-evaluated in four weeks, Keith Langlois of the Pistons' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
While Ivey is set to be re-evaluated in four weeks, the 22-year-old guard will likely be sidelined for a longer period while recovering from a broken fibula. Until Ivey is able to return to action, Marcus Sasser, Malik Beasley, Tim Hardaway and Ausar Thompson could all see increased roles in Detroit's backcourt.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
Ivey impressed in his rookie year after being selected No. 5 overall in the 2022 NBA Draft. He offers impressive athleticism and playmaking abilities for someone his age. The 21-year-old averaged 16.3 points, 5.2 assists and 3.9 rebounds in 31.1 minutes across 74 appearances. Ivey struggled with his efficiency, shooting just 41.6 percent from the field, 34.3 percent from three and 74.7 percent from the free-throw line. The hope is that he improves his efficiency in his second year, as most guards struggle right out of the gate in the NBA. The Pistons added Ausar Thompson with the No. 5 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and will have Cade Cunningham healthy to start the season after playing in just 12 contests last year. This means that Ivey will likely have the ball in his hands less next season, but could also help him find easier looks. Thompson, in particular, should prove a quality option to pass to in transition to pick up extra assists. A major positive for Ivey is his availability, as few other starters in the NBA missed eight or fewer contests last year. While Ivey may not see a massive statistical jump in his sophomore campaign, the young guard is still capable of improving upon his production and is well worth a late-round pick in fantasy.
Selected fifth in the 2022 NBA Draft, Ivey wasted no time displaying his talent. He put on a show in his two Summer League appearances with 15.5 points, 4.0 assists, 3.0 rebounds, 1.5 threes over 18.8 minutes per game before suffering a minor ankle injury and being shut down for the remainder of exhibition play. He possesses elite quickness and athleticism, which should help him create his own shots at the NBA level. Ivey impressed as a freshman in college in 2020-21, but he took a major leap as a shooter last season, including an improvement to a respectable 35.8 percent conversion rate from beyond the arc. He figures to form a dynamic young tandem alongside second-year point guard Cade Cunningham, who pieced together an impressive rookie campaign last season for the Pistons. Ivey may not play on the ball as much as he did last season at Purdue, but the rookie should get plenty of opportunities to score and certainly can handle and distribute the rock when called upon. His landing spot on a rebuilding Pistons squad should afford him plenty of playing time as a rookie, and Ivey's athleticism should allow him to impact the game on both ends of the floor. That being said, Ivey should primarily be seen as a scorer for fantasy purposes, though ancillary box score production could materialize depending on how trusting coach Dwane Casey is of the rookie. It's understandable if fantasy managers in standard formats who are high on Ivey gamble on him with a late or final pick, but chances are, he'll be better suited for deep leagues and dynasty/keeper formats.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could return this season
GDetroit Pistons
January 6, 2025
Ivey suffered a broken left fibula on Jan. 1 against the Magic, but the team hopes he'll be able to return before the end of the regular season, according to Keith Langlois of the Pistons' official site.
ANALYSIS
Ivey was enjoying the best season of his career, averaging 17.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists in 29.9 minutes across 30 appearances before getting injured. According to Langlois, the fibula tends to heal more quickly than other leg bones, so the Pistons remain hopeful that Ivey can return to the hardwood before the regular-season campaign ends in mid-April.
