Sumner continued to hold a depth role with the Pacers last season, though he was able to have a nice string of performances to end the season while Indiana dealt with injuries. During his final 24 appearances (19 starts), he averaged 10.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 21.6 minutes. However, Sumner suffered a torn Achilles during an offseason workout and is expected to miss most, if not all, of the upcoming season.
Forced into action last season, Sumner logged career highs in a number of categories in his third NBA season. He averaged 4.9 points, 1.8 dimes and 1.5 rebounds across 14.4 minutes as a reserve for Indiana and drew three starts for the short-handed Pacers. Sumner saw extended run due to a litany of injuries across the board for the Pacers, but barring similar circumstances in 2020-21, Sumner isn't expected to see many meaningful minutes. He'll contend with the likes of Victor Oladipo, Jeremy Lamb, Malcolm Brogdon, Aaron Holiday and Justin Holiday for playing time on the wing, and Sumner is a guy to leave undrafted in nearly all fantasy basketball leagues this season.
A late-second-round pick in 2017, Sumner appeared in only one game as a rookie but saw a slight increase in opportunity in Year 2. He made 23 appearances, logging a pair of starts and averaging 2.9 points, 1.0 rebound and 0.5 steals in 9.1 minutes per contest. The Xavier product inked an extension with the Pacers over the summer, and he could be set for a larger workload in 2019-20. He's able to play three positions, so the hope is he'll be able to help compensate for the losses of Thad Young and Bojan Bogdanovic, while also filling in as a reserve guard as Victor Oladipo recovers from a severe knee injury. Fantasy-wise, Sumner should not be on the radar for most owners, but he may be another injury or two away from stepping into a regular rotation spot.
