Despite playing just 22.4 minutes per game during his rookie season, Thompson flirted with standard league value, ending as the 140th-ranked player. He missed 19 games early in the season due to an ankle injury, limiting his opportunity to carve out a role on a young team laden with talent. He finished the season strong, closing with a triple-double on the final night. However, his output was largely due to the fact that Alperen Sengun was shut down due to injury. The Rockets are a team on the rise and Thompson is likely to be a key piece for them moving forward. With that said, he will have to contend with players like Cam Whitmore and Tari Eason, not to mention impressive rookie Reed Sheppard, with all looking to make a case for more playing time. Thompson's offensive game remains a work in progress, something that could limit his short-term appeal. However, a proven ability to contribute across multiple categories while providing elite rebounding numbers from the guard/wing position should ensure he has a consistent role. Uncertainty aside, Thompson is worth considering as a late-round pick, just in case he asserts himself early in the campaign. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Amen Thompson was a five-star recruit by ESPN who won a state high school basketball title with Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He and his brother, Ausar, bypassed their senior high school years to play in the Overtime Elite. In 2021, he played for Team OTE, where he averaged 14 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.1 steals. Last season, he moved to City Reapers, where he averaged 16.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 2.4 steals in 28.2 minutes. His team won the league title in a 3-0 sweep over the YNG Dreamerz. Thompson has been operating as a ballhandler and playmaker with wing size and elite athleticism. He plays best with spacers around him, as opponents often go under screens. Even with that being the case, Thompson's quickness and vertical leap help him blow past and rise over defenses with acrobatic finishes. When teams collapse, he finds the right man with an accurate pass. He's bothersome on defense and can beat his man to the spot, and he's shown good IQ in help situations. Thompson will likely need the ball in his hands at the NBA level to unlock his full potential, which could be All-Star level, but how quickly he gets there may depend on if he lands on a team with or without an established point guard. Unquestionably, he'll get easy points and make a defensive impact through his top-shelf athleticism, but playing off ball isn't his strong suit. Thompson holds similarities to a wing-sized Ja Morant or a more athletic Ben Simmons.

January 13, 2025
Thompson amassed 19 points (7-15 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 4-7 FT), 13 rebounds, four assists, five blocks and two steals over 41 minutes during Monday's 120-118 victory over Memphis.
ANALYSIS Although it was teammate Jalen Green who stole the show with a game-high 42 points, Thompson put his fingerprints all over Monday's game while tallying his 10th double-double of the campaign and matching his season high of five swats. The 21-year-old former No. 3 overall pick continues to take a considerable leap in his second season, as he's averaging 15.6 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.9 blocks, 1.4 steals and 0.4 three-pointers in 37.2 minutes over his last eight contests (seven starts). The versatile Thompson should continue starting for the Rockets as long as Jabari Smith (hand) remains on the shelf, bolstering the former's fantasy upside in the interim.

2023 Fantasy Outlook

When teams collapse, he finds the right man with an accurate pass. He's bothersome on defense and can beat his man to the spot, and he's shown good IQ in help situations. Thompson will likely need the ball in his hands to unlock his full potential, which could be All-Star level, but his role on Houston as a rookie is somewhat murky. The team brought in veteran point guard Fred VanVleet during the offseason, and Jalen Green figures to handle the ball plenty in the backcourt as well. The team doesn't hesitate to run action through Alperen Sengun in the post, either. The concern about Thompson playing off ball is that he can't shoot. His form is poor, and he even shot just 64.6 percent from the charity stripe in the OTE. He should still be able to do enough as a passer, rebounder and defender to make an impact in fantasy, but he figures to be better in points leagues.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could face suspension
GHouston Rockets
December 30, 2024
Thompson could be suspended for his altercation with Tyler Herro during Sunday's game against Miami.
ANALYSIS Thompson threw Herro down to the court, which led to a massive altercation that saw six total players get ejected. Thompson is likely to see the harshest punishment among the players involved, and it wouldn't be out of the question for him to see a multiple-game suspension. Any games lost for Thompson would be a huge blow to Houston, as they are currently without Tari Eason, who is dealing with a lower-leg issue.
