Kevin Seraphin signed a $3.8 million qualifying offer to stick with the Washington Wizards, with the size of the deal indicating that he's an important part of the team's plans. However, the Wizards also signed Kris Humphries and DeJuan Blair during the offseason, while Marcin Gortat and Nene Hilario are back to start in the frontcourt. After struggling with their frontcourt depth for much of last season, the Wizards now appear to have quite a crowd. Seraphin, who averaged 4.7 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 0.5 blocks in 11 minutes per game last season, could very well be the odd man out, despite logging more than 20 minutes per game in both 2011-12 and 2012-13. Given that he currently appears to be the fifth or sixth big man, Seraphin will probably need to catch a few breaks to find any sort of fantasy utility this season.
Seraphin saw a career high in minutes (22 per game) last season. Expect those minutes to decline as Seraphin loses power forward minutes to Harrington and focuses on backing up the center position.
Seraphin improved last season in his sophomore year in the NBA. Depending on the health of Nene and Okafor, he could see more time on the floor than the Wizards expect. The team is looking for improvement on the defensive side and more rebounding. His minutes doubled last season, resulting in modest bumps in points (from 2.7 to 7.9) and rebounds (from 2.6 to 4.9) in 20.6 minutes per game. He also swatted 1.3 shots per tilt last year.
The 6-9 forward is still very raw, and there’s not much playing time to be had in the Wizards' frontcourt. Developing Vesely will be more of a priority, since he was a lottery pick this year. Seraphin only averaged 2.7 points and 2.6 boards last year, and it’s hard to imagine him getting the opportunity to improve those numbers much this year.
Seraphin, one of the three 2010 first-round picks on the Wizards (he arrived along with Hinrich from the Bulls in a trade), is a physical big man. He might not yet be ready for major minutes, but could see a little action in 2010-11 given his upside.
