Armstrong, a former first-round draft pick of the Hornets singed by the Wizards as a free agent this offseason, has not done much so far in his NBA career but still may have some upside. He could push McGee for minutes at center in 2010-11.
In 2006, the Hornets drafted Armstrong with one of their lottery picks hoping that he would be able to step in and become a regular rotation player. Three years later, Armstrong continues to disappoint and still has not cracked the rotation. After a disappointing rookie season, he followed it up with even worse campaigns in his second and third year. With Ike Diogu ahead of him on the depth chart, Armstrong looks to be the odd man out in this frontcourt.
In 2006, the Hornets drafted Armstrong with one of their lottery picks hoping that he would be able to step in and become a regular rotation player. Two years later, Armstrong continues to disappoint and still has not cracked the rotation. After a disappointing rookie season, he followed it up with an even worse sophomore campaign. With Melvin Ely ahead of him on the depth chart, Armstrong might not even see 5 minutes per game this season.
Armstrong showed very little in his rookie season and doesn’t have the confidence of coach Byron Scott as of yet. The club signed veteran Melvin Ely, who is expected to back up Tyson Chandler at center, so Armstrong will have another season of limited playing time. He’s got a decent offensive game and is a good shot-blocker, but Armstrong’s not a fantasy contributor just yet.
Armstrong was drafted 12th by the Hornets who adds size to a team that lacked depth at the center position. He should come in and contribute right away defensively, but his offensive ability is lacking. He may push for serious playing time if he shows that he is able to defend well against bigger centers. Realistically, it will take him a year to adjust and bulk up to compete at the NBA level. He should put up a four rebounds and a block per game in limited action.
