The Suns waived Atkins on Monday, Yahoo! Sports' Marc Spears reports.
ANALYSIS
Atkins did not have a great chance of making the squad with both Steve Nash and Goran Dragic returning to Phoenix. Do not expect Atkins to be a fantasy contributor this season.

Atkins was brought in prior to the 2007-08 season as the club's answer to a iffy point guard situation. He played well in the preseason and then proceeded to suffer through several injuries, including a sports hernia, which limited his effectiveness and left him out of a starting job even after he returned. Atkins also had arthroscopic knee surgery in September and will miss all of training camp. As a result, Anthony Carter will likely have the starting job initially, but we think Atkins will take it over eventually – assuming he's healthy.
Though a shoot-first player, Atkins will be the likely starter at point guard for Denver. Last year, the Nuggets made their postseason push when coach George Karl moved Allen Iverson to off-guard with Steve Blake manning the point. Much of the offense still runs through Iverson, so Atkins won’t be asked to be a distributor as much as other starting point guards. However, on a team that was second in possessions per game last season, Atkins will have opportunities to rack up some assists, especially with finishing threats like Iverson and Carmelo Anthony. His biggest fantasy value will come as three-point shooter, where he’s a career 37 percent, and that’s an area in which Denver has been particularly weak the last few years.
The Grizzlies acquired the veteran Atkins, best known for his long-range shooting, after starter Damon Stoudamire went down for the season. Atkins filled in ably, netting 11.4 points, 1.7 boards and 3.0 assists per game in 43 contests after joining the Grizz. This season, with Mighty Mouse back in action, look for Atkins to serve as his primary backup or as a three-point bomber off the bench.
Atkins, who came over to the Wizards in the deal for Kwame Brown, provides veteran depth in the backcourt as well as an ability to come off the bench when three-pointers are in order. Atkins started all 82 games for the Lakers last season, averaging a career-best 13.6 points, but will find himself in a reserve capacity in Washington.
Atkins takes over the new Lakers offense, and hitting Kobe Bryant, Caron Butler and Lamar Odom on the break should give him lots of opportunities to up his assist totals. Atkins shot just 39.7 percent last year (after a woeful 37 percent performance the year before), but he won't be asked to score much on the Lakers. On a team with that much talent, Atkins might have some fantasy potential, but don't expect a whole lot.
With the Pistons trading for both Bob Sura and Lindsey Hunter, Atkins' days with the team might be numbered. If he does end up staying with Detroit, Atkins is unlikely to get enough playing time behind Chauncey Billups to have much fantasy impact.
