Wallace (foot) retired from the NBA on Wednesday, HOOPS WORLD reports.
ANALYSIS
Wallace attempted to return to the court Monday for the first time since Dec. 13, as he was sidelined with a stress fracture in his foot. However, he lasted a mere four minutes before leaving the game for good. In his comeback season, he averaged 7.0 points (on 38.7 percent shooting), 4.0 rebounds, 1.0 treys, and 0.7 blocks in 14.1 minutes over 21 contests. Wallace's appearances, while brief, provided a blast from the past in 2012-13.

After spending the past five and half seasons with the Pistons, Wallace signed a contract with Boston as a gun-for-hire to help lead the Celtics to another championship. Wallace was the starting center during his stay in Detroit, but his role in Boston is still unclear. The Celtics have rolled out a starting front line of Kevin Garnett and Kendrick Perkins the past two seasons, and Wallace may have to assume a sixth-man role. At, 35, he’s creeping towards the end of his career, but Wallace was still able to post solid averages in points (12.1), rebounds (7.4), threes (1.7), steals (0.9) and blocks (1.3) last season. He did struggle with his shooting, though, finishing with a career-low 41.9 percent from the floor. As always, Sheed’s problem is an unwillingness to play in the paint. At 6-11 with a long wingspan and an array of post-up moves, Wallace has the ability to dominate opponents on the block. Instead, he relies on a shaky long-range game. If Garnett and Co. can convince Wallace to stay planted down on the block, he could be in line for a revival in Boston. If not, Sheed will still provide plenty of value by being one of the few players in the Association capable of recording more than one three-pointer, steal and block per game.
Wallace regained his center-eligibility in most leagues last season, and despite slowing down on the almost two threes per game that had made him one of the best options among big men in recent years (1.45 threes per last season) he’s still a multi-category threat and a valuable fantasy starter. He only averaged 12.7 ppg, but his 6.6 boards, 1.7 blocks, and 1.2 steals along with the treys helped make up for the lack of scoring. Wallace is still one of the best defensive big men in the NBA, and when he’s focused he has an excellent post game on offense that complements his long-range jumper. On the other hand, Wallace will be 34 years old by the time the season starts, so his best days are likely behind him.
Last season Wallace lost his center-eligibility and the almost two treys per game pace that had made him one of the best fantasy options among big men the previous year. His 12.3 ppg were an 11-year low, but his 7.2 boards, 1.6 blocks, 1.4 treys and 1.0 steals helped make up for the lack of scoring. On the other hand, Wallace will be 33 years old by the time the season starts, so last season may have been the beginning of his decline. He’s still a value in the middle rounds, but if someone wants him early because of his big name let them have him.
Wallace has consistently been a good all-around fantasy producer for several years, but the Pistons hiring of Flip Saunders last season helped improve one of the dimensions of Wallace’s game and raise his fantasy stock. Wallace’s good mid-range/deep jumper combined with the Flip Saunders offense, which is built around wide-open jump shots, led to Wallace knocking down a career-high 1.9 three-pointers per game. When combined with his other numbers, those three-pointers take Wallace from an adequate middle-round pick to someone that could easily be considered in the first three rounds. And while the loss of Ben Wallace might hurt the Pistons as a team, his absence both opens up the offense further and also leaves more rebounds available for Rasheed this season.
Mr. Technical Foul has turned into the model player in the Pistons' system, putting aside personal gain to play for a winner, which is great for new coach Flip Saunders, but not so good for Wallace’s fantasy owners. Wallace averaged just 14.5 points per game last season, the lowest point total of his career, but he did up his rebound average to just over eight per game. Wallace will give you about one three-pointer per game, but he struggles when he falls in love with his outside shot. The ex-Tar Heel shot just 44% from the field last season and got to the line just 2.5 times per game. Wallace can be a solid contributor to a fantasy team, but don't expect too many games with really big scoring or rebounding numbers. He should put up just about the same numbers as last year.
It seemed like a marriage made in hell... one of the NBA's most well-known agitators and an old-school, no-nonsense coach who preaches the game "as it should be played." So, of course, they rolled through the playoffs and knocked off the prohibitive favorites, and the agitator signed a five-year extension. On talent alone, 'Sheed makes the top ten among NBA fours. His ability to score inside and outside is rare among big men, and he's a perfect fit in Detroit's share-the-ball, no-stars system. In fact, his (somewhat shocking) willingness to be part of that winning system is the reason he's ranked lower than some of the others on this list - while it helps his team win, it won't necessarily pad his stats.
Despite all the troubles, Wallace remains an excellent multi-category source for fantasy teams at the power forward position. He is Portland’s No. 1 scoring option and continually leads the team in field goal attempts. Expect 18-20 points with 7-8 rebounds with one steal and one block per game. He’s a career 50.2 percent shooter and has hit 36 percent of his three pointers in the last two seasons. Because this is the last year of his contract, he’s a candidate to be traded, but that shouldn’t hurt his value. The emergence of Zach Randolph may move Wallace to small forward or center on occasion.
