The Knicks are taking a serious gamble with Allan Houston. If they had waived him under the new CBA’s one-time amnesty provision, the $40 million he’s owed through next season wouldn’t count against the luxury tax – but the Knicks would still have to pay that salary, and they’d get no salary cap relief. If Houston retires due to his lingering knee problems, insurance will cover his salary, and the team could get a salary cap exception. So, a Houston retirement would be much better for the Knicks than a waiver – and that’s the only reason he is still on the roster. Houston told the media this summer that he’s planning on participating in training camp and playing this season – but he’s also said he’ll retire if his knee won’t let him play at an acceptable level. We’d be floored if Houston suits up for the Knicks in even one regular-season game this year.
