The Knicks have waived Houston, the Daily News reports.
ANALYSIS
Houston was a long shot to begin with, but did not play in a preseason game due to a thigh injury, which obviously did not help his cause.

The Knicks are taking a serious gamble with Allan Houston. If they had waived him under the new CBA’s one-time amnesty provision, the $40 million he’s owed through next season wouldn’t count against the luxury tax – but the Knicks would still have to pay that salary, and they’d get no salary cap relief. If Houston retires due to his lingering knee problems, insurance will cover his salary, and the team could get a salary cap exception. So, a Houston retirement would be much better for the Knicks than a waiver – and that’s the only reason he is still on the roster. Houston told the media this summer that he’s planning on participating in training camp and playing this season – but he’s also said he’ll retire if his knee won’t let him play at an acceptable level. We’d be floored if Houston suits up for the Knicks in even one regular-season game this year.
Houston’s value takes a sizeable hit this season, as the Knicks now have three capable players for only two starting backcourt positions after the signing of Jamal Crawford. Stephon Marbury will undoubtedly get his minutes at point guard, so Houston will end up splitting playing time with Crawford at the two. Playing time won’t be the only question mark for Houston, as his balky knees were still giving him trouble this summer and preventing him from going all out while practicing. Houston is a great source for threes, points and FT percentage when healthy and given playing time, but there's big time downside here.
Houston came into his own as a top tier scorer last season and with fellow shooting guard Latrell Sprewell gone, there's no reason why that would subside. He'll never be the total package in other categories but at a guaranteed 22.0 points and over 2.0 three-pointers a game, who's complaining.
