Jones missed 49 games last season due to a number of injuries, most notably a leg issue that cost him nearly three months. When healthy, he was productive, averaging 11.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.5 steals, and 1.8 blocks in 27 minutes per game through 33 contests. Jones shot an impressive 53 percent from the field, doing most of his damage in the lane. He's an excellent around-the-rim finisher, shooting 68 percent near the rim, and has a respectable three-point shot for a player at the power forward position. On defense, Jones has a bit to work on in the rebounding category only averaging a little below the average numbers for those at his position. Jones, however, has shown that he can be a good rim protector and has decent enough speed to keep up with the average players at his position. While Jones appears to be healthy coming into this season, he will still have to compete with Howard and Motiejunas for minutes.
After a rookie season spent predominantly in the D-League or firmly planted to the end of the Rockets bench, Jones came back in his second year and claimed a spot in the rotation, starting 71 of the 76 games he played in. He nearly doubled his minutes per game from 14 to 27, which helped him improve on his numbers across the board. Jones finished the 2013-14 season averaging 12.1 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.7 steals, and 1.3 blocks, all of which were an increase on his rookie season numbers of 5.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, 0.8 assists, 0.6 steals, and 1.0 block per game. Jones boasted impressive shooting percentages for a big man, as he shot 54 percent from the field and 31 percent from the three-point line. His 54 percent from the field was good enough to land him in the top 20 for forwards last season. Jones should continue to improve on his game, considering he's only going into the third season of his career, so look for him to get a heavy dose of minutes during the upcoming season. If he's able to take the next step, Jones will have a great shot at becoming a long-term option for the Rockets at power forward, and a player they'll rely on for his superior athletic ability on defense, and his improving offensive output.
Jones could be the slight favorite to start, given his dominant showing in the D-League last year and his ability to shoot from outside for a big man.
Jones will compete for backup minutes at the three with Marcus Morris and Royce White behind Chandler Parsons and possibly Carlos Delfino. He's a versatile big man with good size and above-average ability as a passer.
