When it comes to filling out an NBA bench, it's a good idea to have an Alan Anderson type. It is even better when a team can get the actual Anderson as the Wizards did in the offseason. The six-year veteran came over from Brooklyn where he mainly came off the bench to score 7.4 points in 24 minutes per gam. He played in 74 games and started 19 as injuries beat up the Nets backcourt. Anderson added 2.8 rebounds, 1.0 three-pointers, 1.1 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.1 blocks. He converted 44 percent from the field and 81 percent when he went to the charity stripe. When he started, the 32-year-old provided 10.1 points and 1.5 three-pointers. In the playoffs, Anderson had a 23-point game against the Hawks in which he went 9-of-11 from the field. For Washington, minutes will be limited at shooting guard and small forward with Otto Porter, Jared Dudley, and Bradley Beal on the roster. If Beal suffers injuries, Anderson could get a nice bump in playing time. His main role will be for some offense off the bench for coach Randy Wittman.
Anderson averaged 7.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.0 assist in 23 minutes per game in his first season with the Nets. The 31-year-old appeared in 78 games (starting 26) and shot just 40 percent from the field. A capable three-point shooter (35% career), Anderson converted a third of his attempts last season (34%). Thus far in his five-year career, Anderson has been little more than a scoring spark off the bench and capable defender. He's not an effective rebounder or passer and doesn't rack up blocks or steals defensively. Even if he sees increased minutes this season due to the departure of Paul Pierce, Anderson's value will be limited by his inefficient shooting. He may be a solid source of three-pointers (1.1 per game last season), but he's more of a volume shooter than a three-point marksman at this point. With Joe Johnson firmly entrenched as Brooklyn's starting shooting guard, Anderson will likely find himself coming off the bench. However, there's a good chance he'll steal some starts at small forward from projected starter Andrei Kirilenko, who missed significant time due to injury last season.
The journeyman signed a two-year deal with Brooklyn in the offseason and will bring another versatile presence to the rotation. He demonstrated last season with Toronto that he's capable of scoring in bunches despite inconsistent minutes. As will be the case with much of Brooklyn's bench, Anderson may again have difficulty carving out a consistent role given the bounty of wing players on the roster.
Anderson was a pleasant surprise after signing with the Raptors late in the season, starting 12 of 17 games, but with a healthier and re-stocked roster around him the best he can hope for is a spot off the bench as a glue player.
Anderson did a good job last season when called upon (5.8 ppg in 15.7 mpg). However, now that Adam Morrison is with the team, expect Anderson’s minutes to dwindle even to the point that he may not play in some games.
