30 Days, 30 Teams, 30 Facts: Detroit Pistons

This article is part of our 30 Days, 30 Teams, 30 Facts series.

With the NBA on hiatus for at least 30 days, I'll be coping by posting an article every day with 30 random/interesting facts from each of the 30 teams. Hopefully, the season will resume when I hit publish on the Wizards' article.

Day Nine:

Detroit Pistons

Stats are mostly from Cleaning the Glass, but also RotoWire, NBA.com and Basketball-Reference.

  1. Blake Griffin's 95.5 points per 100 shot attempts -- the lowest of his career -- is in the sixth percentile for bigs. He shot just 55% at the rim this season, which is in the ninth percentile.
  2. 55% of Blake Griffin's shots were unassisted -- one of the highest marks for bigs (99th percentile). He's been in the 90th-plus percentile since 2016-17, and the increase in unassisted shots has correlated strongly with a decrease in effective field-goal percentage through his career.
  3. Four players on the Pistons are in the 90th-plus percentile for their position in assist percentage: Tim Frazier (37.9%), Blake Griffin (18.5%), Derrick Rose (37.2%), Luke Kennard (18.4%). However, Frazier is also in the last percentile in turnover rate (20.5%).
  4. Sekou Doumbouya averages just 0.9 assists per 36 minutes.
  5. Sekou Doumbouya makes the shot on 32.0% of the shooting fouls that he draws -- in the 87th percentile for forwards.
  6. Bruce Brown takes 51% of his shots at the rim, which is in the 98th percentile for combo guards.
  7. Brandon Knight has one made shot at the rim with the Pistons this season. With Detroit, he's taken 80% of his shots from three -- in the 100th percentile for point guards.
  8. Derrick Rose is shooting 47% from floater range, ranking in the 91st percentile for point guards. It's the second-most accurate he's been from that spot in his career.
  9. Opponents shoot 3.9% better from three when Langston Galloway is on the court -- the ninth percentile for wing players.
  10. Langston Galloway averages only 0.8 turnovers per 36 minutes.
  11. Langston Galloway is shooting 53% (68-of-128) from the corner -- the 96th percentile for wing players.
  12. Langston Galloway makes the shot on 40.6% of his drawn shooting fouls -- the 94th percentile for wings.
  13. Luke Kennard has hit 41% (58-of-141) of his non-corner threes, ranking in the 92nd percentile for wings.
  14. During each of his two seasons following his rookie campaign, Luke Kennard has increased his usage, points per shot attempt and assist rate.
  15. Thon Maker draws a foul on 19.7% of his shot attempts, which ranks in the 91st percentile for bigs.
  16. Detroit has three players in the 90th-plus percentile for non-shooting fouls drawn as a percentage of team plays: Blake Griffin (3.6%), Christian Wood (3.3%), Brandon Knight (3.6%).
  17. Christian Wood has the highest point differential (+11.0) of anyone on the Pistons who has seen at least 700 minutes. That difference ranks in the 96th percentile.
  18. Sekou Doumbouya has the lowest point differential (-13.3) of anyone of the Pistons who has seen at least 700 minutes. That difference ranks in the fifth percentile.
  19. When Sekou Doumbouya is on the court, opponents shoot 2.5% more long mid-range jumpers -- the 95th percentile in terms of forcing that shot.
  20. The Pistons converted 9.3 fewer points per 100 halfcourt possessions with Andre Drummond on the court -- the lowest mark on the team and in the seventh percentile.
  21. The Pistons allowed 21.3 more points per 100 transition plays with Andre Drummond on the court -- a difference ranking in the third percentile.
  22. Opponents score 15.2 fewer points per 100 transition plays with Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk on the court -- a difference that ranks in the 91st percentile.
  23. Out of all Pistons lineups that have seen 100+ possessions together, the best is +34.9 and contains Derrick Rose, Langston Galloway, Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk, Markieff Morris and Christian Wood. The worst is -21.1 and contains Bruce Brown, Langston Galloway, Luke Kennard, Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond.
  24. Detroit has played 72 small-ball possessions -- no Andre Drummond, Blake Griffin, Thon Maker, Christian Wood, John Henson -- for a net rating of -38.7.
  25. Detroit's big-ball lineups -- Andre Drummond and Christian Wood together -- were +5.9 in 554 possessions.
  26. The Pistons have 5.2 fewer wins than expected based on point differential -- the largest negative discrepancy in the NBA. They should be on pace for 31.4 victories.

  28. Since the All-Star break, the Pistons have both the third-worst offense (108.2) and defense (118.4). However, they're top 11 in both offensive and defensive location effective field-goal percentage (54.2, 53.3).
  29. Since the break, the Pistons have the third-highest efficiency (145.8 points per 100 possessions) in transition plays off of live rebounds.
  30. Since the break, the Pistons have allowed the second-fewest opponent transition plays off of live rebounds (21.7%).
