August 19, 2020
The Marlins released Castillo on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Castillo signed with Miami earlier this month after the team placed backstops Jorge Alfaro (COVID-19) and Chad Wallach (undisclosed) on the injured list, but both have since resumed working out at the organization's alternate training site in Jupiter. With both players nearing returns and Francisco Cervelli and Ryan Lavarnway still ahead of him in the pecking order at catcher, Castillo was deemed expendable.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2009
2008
Acquired from the Diamondbacks in the Adam Dunn trade, Castillo is a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none. He's capable of filling in as a backup catcher among other positions, an option that Reds manager Dusty Baker opted not to employ, out of fear of "embarrassing" Castillo. Baker is more concerned about embarrassment than development, which sheds light on the team's mindset heading into 2009. Because of that defensive limitation, Castillo's overall value is limited, as he'll find fewer chances to play regularly.
If there were a versatility competition in the Arizona organization, Castillo would run away with the gold medal. Primarily a catcher, Castillo played the bulk of his games behind the plate, while logging a combined 35 contests between second base, shortstop and third. Defensively, he's the team's best prospect behind the plate, but he's got enough speed (18-for-32 steals) that a utility role down the road isn't out of the question if he's able to be more selective on the basepaths and at the plate (17:62 BB:K in 410 at-bats).
