Isn't trolling for saves fun? Black was believed to be the next in line behind incumbent closer Bobby Parnell. Parnell actually went down on Opening Day, but it wasn't Black who got the call. Black’s inability to find the strike zone with any regularity was likely a big reason. In fact, he walked 10 batters in just nine innings during the first month of the season in Triple-A. He walked another seven in nine more innings during May before finally getting called up. Although, even with the exorbitant walk rate, he still allowed just a 1.45 ERA during that Triple-A run, lower than his 1.55 WHIP. He was an asset with the Mets, posting a 2.60 ERA in 35 innings. His 12.8% walk rate was still way too high, but it was actually a massive improvement from the 21.0% percent he registered in Triple-A. Despite the strong season, the 27-year-old doesn't appear any closer to garnering saves with the emergence of Jenrry Mejia and impending return of Parnell.
Black parlayed a strong 2012 campaign at Double-A Altoona and an equally promising showing over the first three months of 2013 at Triple-A Indianapolis into a late-July call-up for the Pirates. However, he struggled in his first stint in the majors and was quickly optioned back down. Black, who posted a 2.51 ERA and struck out 63 batters over 46.2 innings at Indianapolis, was then acquired by the Mets in late August as part of the Marlon Byrd deal and received an immediate promotion. Black has a bit of a funky delivery and throws in the 90s, but he struggles to repeat his mechanics and subsequently allows too many walks. He should open 2014 with the Mets and could get a shot at closing, if Bobby Parnell struggles to recover after surgery to repair a herniated disc in his neck.
