Sent to minor-league camp
San Diego reassigned Lopes to minor-league camp Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Lopes served as a non-roster invitee this spring and performed well in Cactus League play, but he was unable to land a spot on the Padres' Opening Day roster. After hitting .360 with a home run, nine RBI, eight runs and six stolen bases over 22 spring games this year, he should be in the mix to be called up if the Padres need depth at some point.

Lopes worked his way up the minor-league ladder, collecting steals and hitting for a decent average, and continued that in his rookie season of 2019. Last year, Seattle gave him a chance to show he had more in the tank, but he was overmatched as an everyday player, particularly against right-handed pitching (.628 OPS). He is still quick-footed, but Lopes has shown little ability to consistently hit major-league pitching and profiles as a short-sided platoon bench player. The Mariners saw it and exposed him to waivers, allowing the Brewers to acquire him with the hope of better results than they received from the last guy they grabbed off waivers from Seattle (Ben Gamel). Lopes has minor-league options, but at 27, his window is closing.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Big-league chance near?
Lopes will be in the mix for a call-up by the Padres this weekend if Manny Machado is unable to return from his hand injury, per AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
Lopes joined San Diego as a non-roster invitee over the winter and has an .864 OPS in 197 plate appearances with Triple-A El Paso. The Padres are in need of infield depth with Machado on the shelf and Ha-Seong Kim suffering a knee injury Thursday, and Lopes would provide some depth and added versatility given his ability to play the outfield.
