2025 Fantasy Outlook
Alcantara spent the year rehabbing from undergoing Tommy John surgery in October 2023. The timing of the procedure limited the right-hander to bullpen sessions, though he began to face live hitters in mid-September. All the progress reports were encouraging, but when he takes the hill in the Grapefruit League, it will be over 16 months since Alcantara threw a ball in anger. Typically, the exercises involved in Tommy John rehab strengthen the area, allowing the pitcher to match, and often add velocity. The concern is always command and control, which were Alcantara's main assets before the injury. Even with a 98-mph fastball, Alcantara's strikeout rate was above average, but not elite. Workload will also be an issue. Rostering Alcantara is a matter of risk tolerance and level of reliance. It's best to treat him as a luxury item and not a staff fixture. Read Past Outlooks
Throws live batting practice
Alcantara (elbow) threw live batting practice at LoanDepot Park on Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Alcantara faced batters for the first time since he underwent Tommy John surgery Oct. 6, 2023. The right-hander's rehab from the operation has moved along swimmingly thus far, and he should be ready to roll for the start of spring training.

Alcantara endured a down 2023 campaign with a 4.14 ERA in 28 starts before going down with a UCL sprain in early September, and he underwent Tommy John surgery a month later. The 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner will in all likelihood be sidelined until 2025 given the elbow procedure's typical 12-to-18 month recovery timeline.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Will not be traded
The Marlins will not trade Alcantara, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, this offseason, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Recent reports suggested that Miami might consider moving their ace, but Mish notes that the club has given Alcantara multiple assurances that it won't happen, at least not anytime soon. Alcantara is expected to be ready to go for Opening Day, and it's possible the Marlins will revisit trading him at the deadline.
