The Pirates reinstated Borucki (wrist) from the 60-day injured list Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Borucki is active for the big club for the first time since early April. He was initially placed on the IL with triceps inflammation before he was later diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome in his wrist. He began a rehab assignment in late June, only to be pulled off of it shortly before the 30-day window ended when he experienced a setback. Borucki resumed the minor-league assignment Aug. 17 and looked sharp during his latest stint at Triple-A Indianapolis, covering five innings and allowing one earned run on one hit and two walks while striking out eight. Given his long layoff, Borucki is likely to be eased back into the Pittsburgh bullpen in lower-leverage situations initially.

Stat Review
How does Ryan Borucki compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
2019
Left elbow tightness took Borucki out of the mix for the original Opening Day, but he recovered in time to debut during the first week of the shortened 2020 campaign. Borucki ended up taking the ball 21 times, tying for fourth on the team, and not only was he able to work regularly coming off the shoulder trouble, but his velocity was way up and remained way up throughout the season. We typically see a jump in velocity going from starting to relief work, but Borucki jumped even more than normal -- so much in fact that his slider was reclassified as a cutter on some sites. Borucki's strikeout rate increased to 28.8%. If he can cut down on the 16.4 BB%, the southpaw could earn more chances to take the ball when the Blue Jays have a lead to protect.
After showing promise across 17 big-league starts in 2018, Borucki missed nearly all of 2019 due to elbow trouble. It began in spring training, with Borucki removing himself from a minor-league game March 20. He opened the season on the 10-day injured list and did not debut until after the All-Star break. The left-hander was clobbered in a pair of starts before landing back on the IL with more elbow inflammation, and season-ending surgery was ultimately deemed necessary to remove bone spurs from the elbow. While Borucki does not throw hard and xFIP and SIERA do not support his strong ratios from 2018, he has a decent changeup and age is still on his side. The Blue Jays have added to their starting staff and Borucki has an option left; he may have to knock off the rust at Triple-A to begin the year, but Borucki will be on the short list for starting opportunities when injuries inevitably hit.
Borucki wears 56 in honor of his idol growing up, Mark Buehrle. Like the former White Sox great, Borucki is a lefty with good command who works quickly and features a changeup. His change had a top-25 swinging-strike rate last season and generated a higher percentage of whiffs than the same pitch from Zack Greinke, Dallas Keuchel, Jeremy Hellickson or Luke Weaver, to name a few specialists. What has been intriguing about this kid is how he has skyrocketed through the system, going from High-A to the majors in under two seasons, and he's done it without skipping much of a beat. His 2018 MLB strikeout rate was below average for a starting pitcher, but he had higher rates throughout the minor leagues. He could be a sneaky play in 2019 in deeper leagues, but with a level of risk that comes from pitching in a division loaded with tough hitting and mostly filled with ballparks with unforgiving run environments.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Candidate to fill in for Anderson
PToronto Blue Jays
July 19, 2020
Borucki could slide into the starting rotation while Chase Anderson (oblique) remains on the injured list.
ANALYSIS
The Blue Jays have already seen Borucki first-hand, particularly in 2018 when he logged 17 starts and pitched to a respectable 6-5 record and 3.87 ERA across 97.2 innings. However, the southpaw appeared to regress over a small two-start sample in 2019, when he generated a 10.80 ERA and 3.15 WHIP over 6.2 frames. Borucki does have an experience advantage on fellow candidates Anthony Kay and rookie prospect Nate Pearson, but it remains to be seen if that pushes him to the front of the line in the eyes of manager Charlie Montoyo.
