Signs with Boston as NRI
The Red Sox signed Stock to a minor-league contract Tuesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Stock most recently pitched in the Mexican Pacific Winter League, posting a 1.60 ERA and 78:37 K:BB over 84.1 innings. The 35-year-old last saw action in the majors back in 2021 and is a long shot to capture an Opening Day roster spot. It's not clear whether the Red Sox plan to use Stock as a starting pitcher or reliever.

Stock finally earned his first taste of major-league action as a 28-year-old and went on to throw 39.2 good innings, finishing the year with a 2.50 ERA. His underlying numbers back up his performance, as his 22.9% strikeout rate, 7.8% walk rate and 50.0% groundball rate all beat the league average, leading to a 2.71 FIP. If his 2.7 percent HR/FB rate regresses as expected, he'll look less like a high-leverage arm, but Stock should still be a capable middle reliever. His strong debut should be enough to secure a role this season in a Padres bullpen which is full of interesting but unproven arms.
