2021 Fantasy Outlook
A starter at the upper levels of the minor leagues, Smith broke in with the Diamondbacks as a long reliever in 2020. He took the ball just six times but totaled 18.1 innings, pitching to a sparkling 1.47 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. The right-hander rode his sinker, averaging 93.3 mph, to a 47.8% groundball rate and in turn limited the opposition to a single home run (70 batters faced). Some estimators peg his deserved ERA roughly two runs higher than it was in his debut, and Smith does not currently any great swing-and-miss pitches, but the Diamondbacks have to be highly encouraged by what they saw from a player taken in the 24th round in 2016. It's not clear whether Smith will return to the farm and resume his development as a starter or remain in the big-league bullpen. The team would be smart not to mess with a good thing as Smith is already 26 years old.
