Signs minors deal with Brewers

Shaffer signed a minor-league contract with the Brewers on Thursday, Jim Goulart of Brewerfan.net reports.

Shaffer was released by the Indians in early July after posting a .164/.216/.310 slash line in 32 games with Triple-A Columbus. The 27-year-old will report to Triple-A Colorado Springs to bolster the team's outfield depth, as Keon Broxton and Brett Phillips are still currently with the Brewers.

Shaffer saw a slight downturn in his power numbers in 2016 but was a much better hitter overall as compared to his 31-game stint in 2015. His .250 average represented a 61-point improvement over the previous season's .189 figure, and seven of his 12 hits impressively went for extra bases. Shaffer has the ability to play both corner infield spots, but his contact rate remains a major concern. He's posted a strikeout rate well over 30 percent in both of his Rays stints, along with respective contact rates of 57 and 63 percent. Significant improvement in this area would enable Shaffer to flash more of the power he's already demonstrated at the minor league level, where he's tallied double-digit homers in four different stops. After he was traded to Seattle in November, Shaffer bounced around the league before being claimed by Cleveland in January. If he happens to earn a role for the Indians, he could go off in his new home park. But he's still just a speculation for deep fantasy rosters.

Shaffer bounced back from a disappointing 2014 season in Double-A in a big way. He was sent back to Montgomery to begin the season and hit seven homers in 39 games to earn a promotion to Triple-A Durham, where he added another 19 homers. The Rays finally called him up in the second half but gave him inconsistent playing time. When it was all said and done, Shaffer had 30 homers across three levels, but there are flaws to his game. He does draw walks but that power swing has holes in it and he’s not even a league-average contact batter. The other issue is there’s not a clear fit on the depth chart, at press time, to project a full-time job for him in 2016. Stay tuned.

Shaffer, Tampa Bay’s first-round pick in 2012, has slowly climbed his way up the organizational ladder. Statistically, he has backslid at each level, as the bat that he showed at Clemson University has to translate. He has some pop, but there are holes in his swing that persist. Shaffer has played third base exclusively in the minors, so he has the arm strength to play other spots. One scout recently wondered if Shaffer could ultimately move to the mound given the direction his career was going at the plate. Until that settles out, you can avoid rostering him in dynasty formats.

Shaffer continued to plug along in 2013, spending the season with High-A Charlotte. He hit .254/.308/.399 with 11 home runs and 73 RBI in 122 games, mostly playing at third base. He showed again that he has promising power and can put the ball out of the park to all fields. Despite being a college draft selection, he may not rise as quickly as expected with Evan Longoria blocking his path to the majors. He did have a bit of a problem with strikeouts, totaling 106 in 469 at-bats. He could eventually see a position switch to first base or a corner outfield spot if he continues to hit with power and the Rays decide to make room for him somewhere. He will likely move up to Double-A Montgomery in 2014 and keep working on his swing.

Shaffer, the Rays' 2012 first-round pick at No. 25 overall, started strong in his professional debut at Low-A Hudson Valley. In 33 games, he hit .308 with an .893 OPS, and slugged four home runs with 26 RBI. He was known for his power and strong arm in college and projects to move through the system as quickly as his bat carries him. He can play both corner infield spots and may eventually shift to first base. He will likely begin the season at High-A Port Charlotte after being a participant in the Arizona Fall League in the offseason. He still is a ways from being in the major leagues but very well could eventually find himself in the middle of the order in the future.
