Moylan has decided to retire, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.

ANALYSIS
The 40-year-old will call it quits after his 2018 season was cut short due to a forearm injury. Moylan spent parts of 12 seasons in the majors, compiling a career 3.97 ERA and 1.31 WHIP across 418.2 innings of relief with the Braves, Dodgers and Royals.

In his second season with the Royals, Moylan logged his highest innings count since 2010, as he fired 59.1 innings with a 3.49 ERA as a versatile member of manager Ned Yost's bullpen. Although he piled up 24 holds, Moylan's value was limited in leagues counting that stat, as his 46:25 K:BB was nothing to write home about. The value to big-league teams comes from his ability to induce a lot of his outs on the ground, which makes him particularly useful in situations where he enters with runners already on base. After turning 39 in December, Moylan was still weighing his option in free agency at press time. Even if he ends up signing a deal to pitch somewhere in 2018, it's unlikely that he'll begin missing bats at a more fantasy-friendly clip in the twilight of his career, and his improved WHIP (1.10 in 2017) was supported by a low .229 BABIP -- a mark more than 50 points lower than his career mark (.281).

2016 was somewhat of a resurrection year for the submarine style Australian reliever, as he was a dependable option for Ned Yost’s 81-81 Royals. He appeared in 50 games throughout the season, third highest in the Kansas City bullpen, finishing 2-0 to go along with his 3.43 ERA and 1.30 WHIP despite relatively low strikeout (6.85 K/9) and walk (3.22 BB/9) rates. His 44.7 innings pitched were his highest since 2010, as he appeared in just 29 innings from 2011 to 2015. He averages just 90.1 mph with his fastball to go along with his low strikeout totals, but his success comes primarily due to his strong 2.96 groundball to flyball ratio. He did not appear in many high-leverage situations for the Royals, recording seven holds on the season with no saves. The free agent will be 38 by the start of the 2016 season.

Moylan, once a huge part of the Braves' bullpen, has suffered through several injuries that have kept him on the disabled list much of the last two seasons. In April of 2011, Moylan had back surgery that caused him to miss most of the season. After returning in September, he pitched just six games before being diagnosed with a torn labrum and rotator cuff. That injury also cost him nearly all of 2012. Now healthy, he will likely never be the workhorse he once was after so many injuries, but the side-armer has been a reliable arm his whole career and could once again be a useful relief option. If the shoulder problems are fully behind him, he could land a bullpen spot with the Dodgers out of spring training.

Moylan appeared in just 13 games as he had back surgery in May and then was shut down with a sore shoulder when he returned in September. He then had surgery to repair tears in his rotator cuff and labrum. When healthy, he induces a lot of ground balls (65 percent of career balls in play) and is tough on right-handed hitters (career .576 OPS allowed). However, he may not be ready until after the regular season starts and his career may be at risk from his shoulder surgery.

Moylan's second season back from Tommy John surgery looked similar to the rest of his career, but there are some signs of concern. While his velocity increased to an average of a 90 mph fastball, it's still short of his pre-surgery form (he averaged 91-92 mph on fastballs from 2006-08). He also saw his walk rate climb to 5.2 BB/9IP - the highest of his career. Still, the sidewinder induced 67.8 percent groundballs and he held right-handed hitters to a .589 OPS. He should be one of the primary setup men for the Braves, but his problems against lefties (3:22 K:BB ratio and .987 OPS) may limit his chances to battle for the closer role.

Moylan will be a key setup man for the Braves after quickly regaining his form last season just 11 months after Tommy John surgery. Moylan has a deceptive sidearm delivery that's tough on right-handed batters (he held righties to just a .534 OPS last season) when combined with a mid-to-high-90s fastball. He struggled with control initially with a 28:21 K:BB ratio in the first half, but posted a 1.00 ERA and 33:14 K:BB ratio in 36 innings after the All-Star break. His fastball did see a slight drop-off in velocity, but he should be even better next year in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery and he'll be a valuable staff filler for fantasy purposes.

Moylan had Tommy John elbow ligament transplant surgery in May and won't be ready until midseason. When healthy, Moylan has a deceptive sidearm delivery that's tough on righties when combined with a mid-to-high-90's fastball. However, it's not clear if he'll be ready to resume his set-up role at any point in 2009.

Moylan proved his rookie season wasn't a fluke after literally coming out of nowhere in 2006 (the former Twins prospect wasn't even playing professional baseball until scouts noticed him playing in Australia). Moylan changed his motion to a sidearm delivery and increased his velocity to the high-90s. The result is that he's tough on right-handed batters, holding them to a .532 OPS last season. Moylan had just a 63:31 K:BB ratio last season, but 12 of those walks were intentional. At age 29, his upside is somewhat limited, but he'll be a key member of Atlanta's bullpen and could figure in the mix for saves if Rafael Soriano gets hurt.

Moylan wasn't even playing professional baseball until scouts noticed him last winter in Australia. A new throwing motion significantly improved his velocity and he was signed after pitching in the World Baseball Classic for Australia. He struck out nearly a batter per inning with decent control between Triple-A and the majors, but at age 30, the former failed Twins prospect's upside is limited. Still, he could carve out a productive role in the Atlanta bullpen.
