Hernandez cleared waivers and was outrighted to the Royals' alternate training site Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old was designated for assigment over the weekend and will remain in the organization after going unclaimed on waivers. Hernandez will continue to provide catching depth in the 60-man pool, but he's unlikely to rejoin the roster if Salvador Perez, Cam Gallagher and Meibrys Viloria remain healthy.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

Hernandez got a little run in the big leagues last season when Chris Herrmann got hurt and Welington Castillo needed a bow down the stretch, recording 11 at-bats in four games. With such a small MLB sample size, Hernandez's 2016 season is best reviewed by looking at his minor league stats. He batted .295 for High-A Visalia with a .866 OPS, but those numbers fell to .194 and .609 when he made the jump to Double-A. The organization will likely opt to return Hernandez to Double-A to see if he can improve his performance there, then move him to Triple-A later in the season. No matter where he starts the season, Hernandez will need at least a half-season of developmental time before he is ready to assume the backup catching duties from Jeff Mathis or Juan Graterol in the big leagues.
It was widely assumed that Hernandez, 21, would be the top choice in the 2014 Rule 5 Draft, and indeed he was. Heralded largely for his defense, Hernandez took a step forward at the dish with the Rays' Low-A Bowling Green affiliate in 2014, slashing .249/.301/.401 with nine homers and 63 RBI in 94 games. If the D-backs want to keep him, Hernandez must be a member of the 25-man roster all season long. Should that happen, the team may need to have a veteran bench player capable of serving as the primary backup catcher, as Hernandez would be unlikely to see more than sporadic starts as a player bypassing three minor league levels to get to the big leagues.
