Lands minor-league deal
Longhi signed a minor-league contract with the Rockies as a non-roster invitee Wednesday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports.

Longhi seems to have been around forever, but he was drafted young and is just 21 years old despite entering his fifth year in the Boston organization. He's made steady advancement from the Gulf Coast to short-season Low-A Lowell to full-season Low-A Greenville to High-A Salem last year, where he stayed afloat offensively 124 games. Longhi, who is pegged to first base and/or corner outfield, hit just two homers last season. While he ranked second in the Carolina League with 40 doubles, he needs to start generating home-run power. As alluded to earlier, he's young, and there's still physical and power upside into which he can grow. The bat is steady -- Longhi's longest hitless stretch was three games -- and he's defensively sound, but he'll be a top prospect in the organization because the Red Sox traded away several elite chips and have graduated others to the big leagues. He'll get a bump to Double-A Portland to open 2017.
