ANALYSIS
Anderson has been working with the Baseball Performance Center in New Jersey on cleaning up his delivery in hopes to returning to the form which saw him post a 2.77 ERA and 136:21 K:BB over 81.1 innings from 2019-20. The 34-year-old has dealt with injuries and uneven performance since then, most recently collecting a 4.04 ERA and 29:15 K:BB across 35.2 frames with the Royals in 2024.

Stat Review
How does Nick Anderson compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9
Average home runs allowed per nine innings.
  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA
Earned run average. The average earned runs allowed per nine innings.
  • WHIP
Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH
The percentage of batted balls hit that met or exceeded the 95 MPH threshold.

After missing all of 2022 due to elbow surgery, Anderson inked a deal with Atlanta last November and made their Opening Day bullpen after a terrific spring. With high leverage pedigree and an outstanding curveball (40.4% whiff rate), the 33-year-old posted a 0.73 WHIP and 18:1 K:BB over his first 13.2 innings. Anderson was fairly consistent in a setup role, posting 15 holds, 4 wins and a save across 35 appearances (35.2 innings) before a shoulder strain put an early end to his season. The right-hander has been riddled with injuries during his career, but has always demonstrated upside when healthy. Anderson was recently traded to Kansas City, where he will likely compete for closing duties if he can stay on the field.
Anderson underwent an internal brace procedure on his pitching elbow in October of 2021 and had his rehab assignment in 2022 delayed due to continued elbow soreness. He never made it back with the Rays, getting shut down late in the year because of plantar fasciitis. Tampa Bay wound up cutting him loose and Anderson quickly latched on with the Braves. Anderson had a run of being one of the most dominant relievers in the game before injuries began to sabotage him in 2021. Lingering questions about his health and potential effectiveness remain, but he's certainly one to keep an eye on.
Anderson is expected to be sidelined for the majority of the 2022 season while he recovers from the right elbow surgery he underwent last October.
Anderson led the Rays with six saves during the regular season, topping a list of 12 pitchers to earn a save for Tampa Bay after 11 different players earned saves for the club during the 2019 regular season. He began his 2020 postseason with three straight scoreless appearances but ended up allowing an earned run in each of his final seven appearances, including the go-ahead run in Game 6 of the World Series. The right-hander seemed to run out of gas and his swing-and-miss evaporated; he had nine strikeouts in 14.2 playoff innings after posting a 44.8 K% during the regular season. Among relief pitchers who threw at least 10 innings during the regular season, Anderson's strikeout rate ranked fifth behind only Devin Williams, Aroldis Chapman, James Karinchak and Edwin Diaz. Bet on a skills rebound, though the Rays' bullpen management and handful of other capable closing options have to temper enthusiasm.
Anderson was traded from the Twins to the Marlins in November 2018 and earned a spot on the Opening Day roster, and he delivered quality innings out of the bullpen in Miami in his first taste of big-league action with a 2.71 FIP and 37.1 K% in 45 outings. The Marlins then flipped him to the Rays at the trade deadline, where he took another step forward with a 1.62 FIP and 41:2 K:BB across 21.1 innings. He recorded one save and 16 holds between the two teams. Anderson is a two-pitch pitcher and uses a curveball (40% usage) to compliment a 96-mph fastball, and he turned into one of the more dominant relievers in the league during the second half with a 45.5 K-BB%. Anderson figures to begin the 2020 campaign in a high-leverage role for the Rays, and after the team traded Emilio Pagan in February, there's a chance Anderson closes. It's not a lock, however, and even if he is the primary closer, Anderson will likely lose occasional chances based on matchups.
Anderson may be the rare 28-year-old with no major-league experience worth knowing. A 32nd-round pick by the Brewers back in 2012, Anderson never signed and instead went to the Frontier League until the Twins purchased his contract in 2015. After recording a 2.25 ERA in 183.2 minor-league innings, split over four seasons, Anderson was acquired by the Marlins, who immediately placed him on their 40-man roster. There may be no organization in baseball better to try to break in with than Miami. It would be a surprise to see him anywhere near the closer conversation early in the season, but after striking out 36.2% of batters while walking just 7.8% at Triple-A last season, it's conceivable that Anderson could work his way towards a high-leverage role as the season progresses.

Deal has two opt-outs
PLos Angeles Dodgers
July 23, 2024
Anderson's minor-league contract with the Dodgers includes opt-outs on Aug. 15 and 28 if he's not on the major-league roster, reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
ANALYSIS
The veteran right-hander was cut loose by Kansas City in mid-July and didn't take long to land a deal with Los Angeles. Anderson posted a 4.04 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 29:15 K:BB across 35.2 innings for the Royals, and he'll likely fill a middle-relief role if the Dodgers add him to the big-league bullpen.
