The Cardinals released Gomez on Tuesday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
ANALYSIS
Gomez made waves in 2022 when he slugged 39 home runs between the Double- and Triple-A levels, earning a spot on St. Louis' 40-man roster. He's disappointed since then, however, getting removed from the 40-man roster back in January and now being cut loose. Gomez will now look to latch on in another organization.

Don't sleep on Gomez. He put up a monster season between Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis in 2022, smacking a combined 39 home runs to lead the minor leagues. The numbers fell off slightly after the step up in competition, but Gomez still had an .882 OPS with Memphis -- not bad for a player St. Louis signed as a minor-league free agent after he fizzled out with Tampa Bay. Gomez's strikeout rates against upper-level competition have been in the mid-to-high 30% range, and the swing-and-miss may simply be too much for him to overcome, but the 24-year-old put himself back on the radar as a legitimate big-league prospect with his power breakout last season. He can also run a little as evidenced by his 10 steals in 13 attempts, though he will likely be limited defensively to the outfield corners. The Cardinals added him to the 40-man roster in November.
Gomez was below league average against rookie-level pitching in 2016 and 2017, but broke out as a 19-year-old in the Midwest League. He ranked first in the league in LD% (25.4), third in ISO (.223) and ninth in wRC+ (131) while spraying the ball with authority to all fields. Gomez also struck out four times as often as he walked, so he will need to improve his pitch recognition in order to have success in the upper levels. At best, Gomez will be a four-category force who does not steal bases. He is already listed at 5-foot-11, 200 pounds, and has a very thick lower half, so it would be an accomplishment if he is a passable corner outfielder by the time he reaches the majors. Tampa Bay had a couple unique prospects who climbed multiple levels last year, but Gomez figures to be a classic Rays prospect who spends a full year at each level, so he may not reach the big leagues until 2021 or 2022.
