Mike Lincoln

Given that Lincoln hadn't pitched in the major leagues since 2004, his 2008 season has to be considered a success. He faltered down the stretch, in part because of overuse, after Jared Burton went on the DL. He also gave up too many gopher balls, a problem that will keep him from getting a legitimate shot at working the eighth and ninth innings for the Reds. He'll be in Cincinnati the next two years, signing a two-year, $4 million deal in early December.

Lincoln hasn't pitched in the majors since 2004, when he appeared in 13 games for St. Louis before undergoing Tommy John surgery. He never fully recovered in 2005, forcing him to undergo a second operation in August. Lincoln will most likely miss all of the 2006 season.

Elbow surgery ended Lincoln's 2004 campaign just in time. He wasn't exactly lighting it up with a 5.19 ERA in 13 games. He was, however, starting to strike a few more batters out, something he has been woeful at during his career. Lincoln may not be ready for the start of Spring Training but would be a nice addition to the middle-relief corps when he is ready.

Lincoln, who signed with Cardinals this offseason, had the chance to become the Pittsburgh closer when Mike Williams was traded to Philadelphia on July 20, but failed to hold the job, going 5-for-8 in save situations. He's better suited for middle relief where he won't do much for your fantasy team.

The Pirates bullpen was one of the best in the NL last year, largely on the efforts of the anonymous middle men and set-up guys. Lincoln was one of them, and now has an ERA of 2.96 in two years in Pittsburgh. His flyball tendencies don't mesh well with PNC Park or the Pirates' defensive strengths, so he's not a good bet for success.
