Agrees to minor league contract
Owings signed a minor league contract with the Mariners on Monday, Jesse Burkhart of Today's Knuckleball reports.
ANALYSIS
Owings is well known for his attempts to land in the major leagues as both a pitcher and as an outfielder; this time around, the right-hander will try to make Seattle's Opening Day roster as a pitcher. Owings has decent career numbers on the mound, but it should be noted that he hasn't pitched for a major league organization since 2012; this year, he posted a 4.30 ERA over 106.2 innings in independent ball. That makes him something of a long shot to garner a roster spot during spring training.

Owings' return to Arizona looked like a success on the surface, but the underlying numbers included a steep decline in his strikeout rate (from 9.45 K/9IP in 2010 to 6.29 in 2011) and a significant loss in his velocity across the board. As a mop-up reliever, teams can do worse since Owings also provides an extra power bat on the bench, but he'll need to regain his velocity and miss more bats in order to maintain his 2011 ERA. Pair that with the fact that he'll need to earn a roster spot during spring training and it should provide more than enough reason to stay away. In fact, the D-Backs opted to do just that when they non-tendered him in December.
