2025 Fantasy Outlook
Garcia finished third in the American League in steals last season with 37 in 39 attempts. However, he managed just a .231 average, seven homers and 58 RBI in 626 plate appearances. The Royals' Opening Day leadoff man, Garcia ended up making 101 starts in the leadoff spot, but he fell to the bottom third toward the end of the year and it will be tough to justify returning him to the top of the order if he doesn't improve significantly upon his .281 on-base percentage. Garcia makes consistent contact but is allergic to walks, and his offense graded out as 31 percent worse than league average by wRC+ last season. His contributions on the bases make him very much relevant in fantasy leagues with rotisserie scoring, but less so in points and OBP leagues. Entering his age-25 season, Garcia has eligibility at both second base and third base. Read Past Outlooks

December 6, 2024
Garcia (elbow) is expected to be ready for the start of spring training, MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garcia reported soreness in his right elbow while playing catch recently and an MRI revealed bone chips, which he had surgically removed Thursday. The Royals are calling the procedure "minor" and do not expect the infielder's availability for the beginning of spring training to be impacted. Garcia slashed .231/.281/.332 with seven home runs and 37 stolen bases for Kansas City during the 2024 regular season.

Stat Review
How does Maikel Garcia compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Despite a strong spring training, Garcia opened the season with Triple-A Omaha. After posting a weak .242/.348/.347 line with the Storm Chasers, Garcia was summoned to the majors where he stayed the rest of the season. His game is hitting the ball hard on the ground with an 87th percentile average exit velocity and 6.1 degree launch angle. He mustered a low 84 wRC+, but Garcia swiped 23 bases. There is always the chance Garcia learns to loft the ball more, but as is he offers a solid batting average floor, with some speed. He batted leadoff in 72 of 123 games but is better suited for a spot lower in the order. He's miscast at third base, but with Bobby Witt Jr. at shortstop, and no in-house challenger, Garcia is ticketed for another season at the hot corner. These aren't the ideal traits for a fantasy corner infielder, but Garcia can be useful in the right lineup construction, especially if he continues to hit at or near the top of the order.
Garcia received a couple of promotions in 2022, as he began the year at Double-A with a .291/.369/.409 slash line through 78 contests. He put up a still-solid .274/.341/.463 line in 40 games at Triple-A, and when the Royals needed reinforcements in the second half of the campaign, he received a nine-game cup of coffee in the majors. His 22.6 percent strikeout rate at Triple-A isn't great, but it's passable, as is his 9.4 walk rate. Garcia likely needs a bit more development time -- he's entering his age-23 season, but a solid hit tool and enticing speed (39 steals in 118 minor-league games last year) bode well for his eventual success. It took him just two years to go from Single-A to Triple-A, and there's a chance a hot spring could allow Garcia to challenge Nicky Lopez for a utility role in the middle infield. The Royals may also opt to bring Garcia along slowly for service-time reasons since they're nowhere near competitive yet.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Returning soon?
3BKansas City Royals
August 31, 2022
Garcia is a possible candidate for a September promotion to provide middle-infield depth.
ANALYSIS
Garcia made his big-league debut earlier this year and produced a .318/.348/.364 line across 23 plate appearances for the Royals in three separate stints with the team. Kansas City's current roster doesn't have much depth in the middle infield and Garcia could receive a callup when rosters expand Thursday. The 22-year-old has played shortstop for the vast majority of his time in the minors but also has experience at second base. He's shown some pop this season with six homers in 19 games for Triple-A Omaha.
