2019 Fantasy Outlook
It is easy (and accurate) to say Garcia is more valuable in real life than in fantasy, but that does not mean he can't someday develop into a top-10 fantasy shortstop. The 5-foot-11 switch hitter received a $2.5 million bonus on July 2, 2017, and was aggressively assigned to the Gulf Coast League for his pro debut as a 17-year-old. He answered the bell, displaying plus defense at shortstop and leading the league with a .369 average -- his 162 wRC+ ranked fourth. He rarely strikes out (11.2 K%) and routinely bangs doubles to the pull side. However, most evaluators do not expect him to ever develop 20-homer power. His above-average speed led to 12 steals on 20 attempts, and he should be a threat to steal at least 15-to-20 bases in his early big-league seasons. It is a throwback profile at the six, as most shortstops hit for power now, and only one qualified shortstop hit over .300 last year (Jean Segura). Garcia could develop into Segura 2.0 if he maxes out.
