Signs minors deal with Cubs
PChicago Cubs
August 7, 2024
Luetge signed a minor-league contract with the Cubs on Wednesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Luetge opted out of his MiLB deal with the Red Sox on Saturday after posting a 3.02 ERA and 1.19 WHIP through 41.2 innings with Triple-A Worcester. He didn't have to wait long to find another gig, and he could potentially be added to the Cubs' bullpen down the stretch if he continues to perform well with Triple-A Iowa.

Prior to 2021, Luetge (pronounced LIT-key) hadn't pitched in the majors since 2015 with Seattle. He signed plenty of minor-league contracts between then, but didn't latch on with any club until he forced the matter with a dominant stretch of Grapefruit League play last spring. Luetge made the Yankees' Opening Day roster and went on to log a career-high 72.1 innings. He endured a rough start last April, permitting at least one earned run in each of his first five outings, but he had a 2.18 ERA and 1.11 WHIP the rest of the way. The southpaw doesn't throw hard (88-mph), but was effective at limiting hard contact. He rarely walked anyone (1.9 BB/9) and kept the ball in the park (0.7 HR/9) en route to a 2.74 ERA and 1.13 WHIP. Luetge's ability to pitch multiple innings ultimately limited his number of high-leverage opportunities, but he could earn some in 2022 based off his recent performance.
For the second consecutive season, Luetge bounced between Seattle and Triple-A Tacoma before making eight of his 12 major-league appearances during a September callup. In 62.1 innings at Tacoma, he posted a 10.1 K/9. Armed with a fastball that only sits in the high-80s/low-90s, Luetge depends on changing speeds with a deceptive slider. When that's working, he can be effective. But too often a lack of control has done him in. The last two seasons, he had a 4.1 BB/9 in 93.1 innings at Triple-A and a 4.1 BB/9 in 46 innings at Seattle. If Joe Beimel doesn't return, Luetge would be in line to be the second lefty in the bullpen behind Charlie Furbush. That was the scenario last season, though, and Luetge couldn't make the roster out of spring training.
Luetge was expected to be a key left-hander in the bullpen last season, but instead bounced between Seattle and Tacoma as his career derailed. After limiting lefties to a .118 BAA in 2012, he regressed to .259 last year. He also allowed 9-of-23 inherited runners to score after just 8-of-50 crossed home plate against him in 2012. While Luetge improved his control somewhat, more is expected than a 3.4 UIBB/9. A 2011 Rule 5 pick, Luetge's best pitch is a sweeping slider. He'll compete for a bullpen spot again in spring training.
A 2011 Rule 5 pick, Luetge was one of the Mariners' better finds last season. The 6-foot-4 southpaw held left-handed batters to a .193 average, quickly working his way into high-leverage situations. It took him 26 outings before he allowed his first earned run, and he stranded 17 of his first 18 inherited runners. Perhaps he tired down the stretch, as his last 10 games produced a 5:5 K:BB and 10 runs, which bloated his ERA. Despite the absence of a big fastball, Luetge generates plenty of swinging strikes by deceptively changing speeds with a sweeping slider that keeps batters off balance. He could stand to improve his control after walking 18 unintentionally in 40.2 innings last season, but he's a valuable member of the bullpen, as his 63 appearances - second on the team - attest. He'll return this season to share the late-inning lefty role with Charlie Furbush.
Luetge profiles as a lefty specialist, but in 69 innings at Double-A Huntsville last season, Luetge posted a 3.13 ERA and 69:23 K:BB. Lefties hit just .175 against him, and he'll get a chance to serve as a specialist in Seattle after the Mariners selected him in the Rule 5 draft from the Brewers in December.

Bigger role on tap?
PNew York Yankees
September 13, 2021
Luetge could emerge with a more prominent role in the Yankees' bullpen with Zack Britton undergoing season-ending surgery and Jonathan Loaisiga also hitting the 10-day injured list in recent days.
ANALYSIS
Luetge has pitched well this season with a 2.84 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 72 strikeouts across 66.2 innings, and he may be the team's most reliable left-handed bullpen option at the moment with Andrew Heaney and Aroldis Chapman each struggling to some degree. This could translate into a bigger role for Luetge as the Yankees try to stay alive in the AL playoff chase, especially with Britton and Loaisiga out of the mix for the time being.
