Inks KBO deal
Kim signed Monday with the Korea Baseball Organization's SSG Landers on a four-year, $12.3 million contract, Jee-ho Yoo of the Yonhap News Agency reports.
ANALYSIS
After a two-year stint in the majors with the Cardinals, the 33-year-old Kim will return to his home country for what will presumably be the remainder of his playing career. Though Kim made good on the Cardinals' two-year, $8 million investment by submitting a 3.46 ERA across 145.2 innings, his advanced age and underwhelming peripheral numbers (9.1 K-BB%, 48.1 GB%) might have made it difficult for him to secure a significant commitment from an MLB team on the open market this offseason. Kim's shaky outlook along with MLB's ongoing lockout were likely motivating factors in him returning to the Landers, the team with whom he spent 13 seasons before making the jump to St. Louis.

Kim has put together two strong statistical seasons in the majors since coming stateside from the KBO. In 2021, he posted a 3.46 ERA and 1.28 WHIP, though the method through which he got there wasn't particularly convincing. He battled a back injury throughout the campaign, which limited him to only 106.2 innings and also caused him to close the season as a reliever. Kim's skills were also not particularly notable, as he managed only a 9.1 K-BB%. Instead of gaudy strikeout numbers, Kim produced decent results by limiting hard contact, as he measured better than 60th percentile marks in average exit velocity, barrel rate, and hard-hit rate. Currently a free agent, Kim's future in the major leagues is ambiguous. Should he find a rotation role, Kim will have the chance to provide decent ratios. However, if he is limited to a bullpen role, Kim lacks the strikeout stuff to consistently occupy a high-leverage role.

Could head back to KBO
Kim may be looking to make a return to the Korea Baseball Organization in 2022 after the league's SSG Landers requested a status check on the left-hander Monday, Daniel Kim of MBC Sports+ reports.
ANALYSIS
After joining the Cardinals on a two-year, $8 million deal ahead of the 2020 season, Kim excelled over eight appearances during the pandemic-shortened 60-game campaign, posting a 1.62 ERA in 39 innings. A lowly 5.5 K/9 rate portended a downturn in his performance in 2021, however, and that's exactly what happened, as Kim's ERA rose to 3.46 over 106.2 innings. St. Louis ultimately moved the lefty to the bullpen by season's end, and upon reaching free agency earlier this winter, the 33-year-old seemed to gain little traction in discussions with MLB teams. The ongoing MLB lockout has left Kim and several other free agents in a holding pattern, and since he likely won't be in the market for a significant deal once the transaction freeze ends, it wouldn't be surprising if he opts to return to his home country to continue his career.
