Gets minors deal from White Sox
The White Sox signed Dunn to a minor-league contract Friday that includes an invitation to spring training, James Fegan of SoxMachine.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Dunn had a showcase for teams last month and evidently looked good enough to earn a camp invite from the White Sox. The 29-year-old didn't pitch at all in 2024 and threw just 3.1 rehab innings in 2023 due to a right shoulder injury which eventually required surgery. Dunn holds a career 4.44 ERA and 113:86 K:BB over 133.2 innings covering parts of four big-league seasons.

The shoulder injury which ended Dunn's last season in Seattle in 2021 delayed his Cincinnati debut in 2022 until August. He felt more tightness in the shoulder in his fifth start back and eventually returned to the injured list in September. Dunn did start another rehab assignment later that month and allegedly finished the season healthy, although he still must be considered a medical red flag going into 2023. Perhaps the shoulder problems can partly explain Dunn's struggles with the Reds, but he hadn't been terribly impressive during his time with the Mariners, either, even as he managed a sub-4.00 ERA. The 27-year-old is an extreme fly ball pitcher with major control problems and he pitches in the most home run-friendly environment in baseball. Dunn hasn't shown nearly enough swing-and-miss ability to overcome that, so even if the shoulder issue is behind him it's difficult to see a path to fantasy viability.

Promotion coming?
With Luis Castillo traded and Tyler Mahle likely being dealt, Dunn could make his debut with Cincinnati after the trade deadline.
ANALYSIS
Dunn was acquired during the offseason in a trade that sent Jesse Winker and Eugenio Suarez to Seattle. He began the season on the injured list with a shoulder injury and was optioned to Triple-A when his rehab assignment ended. The 26-year-old has had success at the big-league level, compiling a 3.94 ERA over 25 starts in the past three seasons with Seattle. The righty struggles with his command, walking 15.5 percent of the batters he's faced in the majors and 11.5 percent of batters at Triple-A this season. Nevertheless, the Reds are a last-place team soon to have openings in their rotation, and Dunn is a promising pitcher that needs a shot to prove he belongs on a big-league pitching staff.
