Rest-of-Season Projections
Cut by Philadelphia
The Phillies released Pujols (Achilles) on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Pujols missed nearly all of the 2019 season after undergoing surgery last April to address a torn Achilles' tendon, appearing in only three rehab games between two of the Phillies' rookie-level affiliates in late August. The 24-year-old should now be at full health or close to it 15 months after surgery, but Philadelphia evidently no longer viewed him as a long-term piece. Pujols was a career .238/.304/.406 hitter across six seasons in the organization, topping out at the Double-A level in 2018.

2017 Fantasy Outlook
The Phillies signed Pujols in 2012 as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic. He showed why he was considered one of the best power hitting prospects in the 2012 class by leading the South Atlantic League with 24 home runs in 128 games for Low-A Lakewood last season. The 21-year-old has a lot of swing-and-miss in his game, having struck out in 32.6 percent of his plate appearances last season. He also hit just .231 against right-handed pitchers, but he made righties pay when he was able to connect, with 14 of his 24 bombs coming against same-handed pitchers. Pujols showed some signs of improvement in cutting back on his strikeouts in August and September. If he can carry that growth forward this season, his prospect stock will start to take off. If he doesn't make more contact and continues to falter against righties, the best-case scenario will be a role on the short side of a platoon if he makes it to the majors in a few years.
