Jonathan Arauz

It's rare a 21-year old player is subject to the Rule 5 draft but Arauz was 17 when he signed out of Panama by the Phillies. In 2015, he was part of the Ken Giles deal, heading to Houston. Arauz was suspended for 50 games in 2017 after testing positive for Methamphetamine. Boston selected Arauz at the winter meetings, hoping for cost-efficient infield help. Arauz's glove plays at second base, shortstop and third base but his offense is limited. Arauz routinely sports a strikeout rate below 20 percent, but he doesn't hit the ball with much authority and only has average speed. Last year as a 21-year old in 105 combined games at High-A and Double-A, Arauz managed only 11 homers and six steals. Arauz will have to impress in the spring or else he'll be offered back to the Astros. While the Red Sox could use the cap relief, they can't afford to carry an empty roster spot all season.
