Jomar Reyes

It seems weird to say, but the only thing not to like about Reyes is last season's lack of production (66 wRC+). On-field performance is obviously a pretty big aspect of a prospect's value, but the development of teenagers, specifically right-handed sluggers, is rarely linear. He was four months younger than any player in the Carolina League in 2016, which in itself excuses much of his failings. The good news is he still has double-plus raw power without debilitating swing-and-miss issues (20.5 percent strikeout rate at High-A Frederick). Many evaluators project him to move across the diamond to first base, but for fantasy purposes, the only concern should be the actualization of what could be an average hit tool. If he hits and becomes a bit more patient at the plate, then his power will show in games and his bat will profile anywhere, even at DH. There is major bounceback potential with Reyes, given his youth and raw tools, but if he falls flat again in 2017 the bandwagon will evacuate.

The Orioles had enough confidence to send Reyes to Low-A as just an 18-year-old, where he delivered when healthy during the 2015 season. Unfortunately for Reyes, a thumb injury held him to 84 games at Low-A as he missed over a month in the middle of the season. A late season hand injury was corrected with surgery after the season and Reyes is expected to enter this spring at full strength. Reyes held a .162 ISO despite his young age. He is already 6-foot-3 and 220 lbs. at his young age, so weight could actually work against him. Reyes could one day put on a power display and his hit tool is also a strength. There is no shot of making the Orioles in the near future, but Reyes could be on track to making his Orioles debut as soon as 2017. Reyes may be ready to begin the season at High-A.
