Beliveau made it less than two weeks into the season before a shoulder injury forced him out, and he would not end up making it back onto the field. The ailment was initially believed to be innocent soreness, but it just kept getting worse, a familiar story for many lefty relievers. Beliveau ended up requiring surgery on what turned out to be a torn labrum. The 28-year-old refused an outright assignment from the Rays after the season, becoming a free agent, ultimately landing with Baltimore on a minor league deal. Considering that his fastball was down a couple ticks before the surgery, it is anyone's guess as to what he will accomplish in 2015. If he can reclaim that velocity and establish himself against lefties, he could return to a role in the major league bullpen, but not a role that will be fruitful for fantasy production.
One of the reasons Tampa Bay felt comfortable trading away Cesar Ramos was that they felt Beliveau could easily take over Ramos' bullpen role. The former free agent pickup did well last season with a 4.0 K/BB, and he allowed just one home run to the 100 batters he faced. He was very tough on lefties allowing just six hits to the 47 he faced, but his future may be on hold. Beliveau participated in the MLB Japan postseason tour and left his last outing with what was deemed as a lat injury. That may throw him off his offseason schedule and lead to a late start out of the gate during spring training. Beliveau's value is limited to AL-only formats that count holds or find other ways to reward middle relievers.
Beliveau spent most of the season with Triple-A Durham but did see one game of action as a September call-up with the Rays. A lefty specialist out of the bullpen, he posted an incredible 15.3 K/9 rate with a 2.62 ERA over 38 games at Triple-A. The interesting aspect to his delivery is that his fastball sits around or below 90 mph, but he uses a lot of movement and deception to miss bats. He has hovered just below the major league level the last few seasons but could compete for a gig in the Rays' bullpen in spring training.
After a breakout season at Double-A in 2011, Beliveau saw his first taste of major league action last season and didn't impress. He manged a strikeout per inning, but he walked 12 and allowed five homers in 17.2 innings. With a low-90s fastball and good breaking pitches, he could carve out a middle relief role in 2013 if he makes the team, but he's far down the list of potential options for high-leverage work after being claimed off waivers by the Rangers in December.
