Rest-of-Season Projections
Targeting return in 2024
Garcia (biceps) has been cleared to throw but won't be ready for spring training, Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors reports.
ANALYSIS
Garcia was sidelined for the entire 2023 season due to a left issue, but he's already drawing interest now that he's gotten the green light to begin throwing. Adams notes that while Garcia likely won't be ready for game action until May, there are already a few teams who have expressed interest in the southpaw.

Garcia has put together three consecutive campaigns with an ERA at or below 3.02. That success has been based primarily on his ability to keep the ball in the yard (0.9 HR/9) and above-average control (7.5 BB%). In 2021, he saw a spike in his strikeout rate to a career-high 25.3%. There wasn't obvious reason for that improvement, as his velocity remained stable and his pitch mix was largely similar to that of previous seasons. His swinging strike rate did jump to a career-best 9.2%, though that doesn't suggest there's any room for Garcia's strikeout rate to continue to grow. Correspondingly, it's difficult to make the case that Garcia will be in the position to pick up consistent save opportunities in 2022, though he has established himself as a reliable and productive reliever that should be in the mix to record double-digit holds.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Option likely to be declined
Garcia, who missed all of 2023 due to a biceps nerve issue, will likely have his $3.25 million club option declined by the Pirates, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
ANALYSIS
Garcia holds a solid 3.61 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 322 career major-league innings, but declining the option is really a no-brainer move for the cost-conscious Pirates given the 30-year-old left-hander's uncertain health. There is no buyout, so it won't cost Pittsburgh any extra money to simply turn the page.
