Continuing career in indy ball
Diaz signed a contract Tuesday with the Gastonia Honey Hunters of the independent Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
ANALYSIS
Jon Heyman of MLB Network reported in April that Diaz agreed to a minor-league deal with the Mariners, but that contract never ended up getting finalized. The 31-year-old will now head to the independent ranks to attempt to keep his career going, and if he impresses in his initial appearances with Gastonia, he should be able to land another minor-league deal with an organization.

The back end of the Rockies' bullpen was wiped out early on in 2020 with injuries to Wade Davis and Scott Oberg. The loss of those two opened the door for Diaz to step in as the closer -- Diaz earned three saves in the first six days of August. It was not meant to be, however, as Diaz hit some bumps in the road and manager Bud Black moved on before the end of the month. His final line was ugly, especially at home (11.17 ERA), which should not surprise anyone. The ERA estimators are kinder to his 2020 performance, but not much, with all the walks (13.2 BB%) and homers (1.80 HR/9) highlighting the difficulties of pitching at altitude. It did not help at all that Diaz's velocity was down multiple ticks. Daniel Bard put his stamp on the ninth-inning job after Diaz slipped up and Diaz will have to pitch his way back into the speculative closer discussion.
